Receive $15 off $50 at Amazon.com by using an AMEX Membership Rewards point toward your purchase. Normally it's a terrible idea to use AMEX Membership Rewards points to pay for anything (aka “Pay with Points”) or to use AMEX points to pay for your statement charges, because your getting only 1 cent (or less!) per point.
The highest value use for AMEX Membership Rewards points is by transferring them to an airline partner frequent flyer program and redeeming them towards international first class or business class, such as Singapore Suites on the A380, Singapore Business Class, Cathay Pacific First Class, or British Airways First Class, so as to get 5-10 cents or more per point in value.
Still, $15 off $50 at Amazon.com is a decent offer since you only need to use 1 AMEX Membership Rewards point (with the rest charged to your AMEX card), especially as the holiday shopping season gets underway. Here are the details:
- Valid until November 13, 2015 or while supplies last
- Offer not available to American Express Membership Rewards cards whose points have previously been used for purchases at Amazon.com within the past 24 months
- Limit one promotion code per Membership Rewards eligible card
- Must have an Amazon.com account; if creating a new Amazon.com account, it may take up to 72 hours before the promotion code will be accepted and applied (so create a new account before 11/10/15)
- Must buy at least $50 of eligible products; taxes, shipping, gift-wrap, digital content are not eligible charges
- Offer available only to Amazon.com customers with an eligible American Express card issued in the United States
Here's how to apply the offer:
1. Go to the AMEX Shop with Points Offer Page on Amazon.com
Click on the “Get Started” button and sign into your Amazon account.
2. Add an Eligible AMEX Membership Rewards Card
You'll need to click a couple of boxes to verify that you're adding an AMEX card with a U.S. billing address and are either the primary cardholder or that the primary cardholder has given you permission to use the card.
3. Add at least $50 in Eligible Purchases to Your Amazon Cart
Note that all purchases must be sold by Amazon; if you add anything not sold by Amazon, you won't be able to redeem the offer.
4. When Checking Out, Make Sure to Redeem Just 1 AMEX Membership Rewards Point Towards the Purchase
Due to the poor redemption value of shopping with AMEX points (1.4 point for just 1 cent of an Amazon purchase), you'll want to ensure you use just 1 AMEX point towards the purchase. Select “choose a different amount” and enter 0.01 as the amount of the purchase you want to redeem AMEX points for. The remainder will be billed to the AMEX card you use.
5. Enter Code SWP9AXP15 to Receive $15 Off $50
After proceeding to the next screen, enter code SWP9AXP14 and click “apply” to take $15 off your $50 or more purchase.
After taking advantage of this offer, we've gone back to maxing out our Chase Freedom 5X on all Amazon spend for Q4 2015, but otherwise we use our Ink Plus to buy Amazon gift cards at Staples, to consistently earn 5X on all Amazon spend. For $50 in spend, that's 250 Ultimate Rewards points, which we value at about $5 (2 cents per point) so effectively 10% back.
