If your airline cancelled or delayed your flight today due to the CrowdStrike outage, you're not alone. Far from it. KLM cancelled 18% and delayed another 56% of its flights, Delta Air Lines cancelled 25% of its flights and delayed another 39%, and United cancelled 14% and delayed 50% of its flight schedule. The biggest occurrence of its type in history, the CrowdStrike outage was due to a kernel driver update to software that allows the CrowdStrike security software to interact with Microsoft Windows at its operating system level (the update did not affect computers running on Mac or Linux operating systems, but the ones airlines run typically run on Windows).
Note that Department of Transportation rules that will require airlines to automatically refund passengers for cancelled flights (as well as domestic flights delayed 3+ hours if the passenger does not accept alternative transportation or travel credit) won't go into effect until October 30, 2024, although you can certainly insist on a full refund of your ticket if the airline has cancelled your flight and alternative transportation doesn't work for you (just be mindful that during this busy summer travel season and today's meltdown, buying a new ticket may be more expensive than your original ticket).
