The AARP $400 off British Airways business class and first class flights offer has been extended to October 31, 2014, for travel November 1, 2013 – March 31, 2015.
While I mentioned the AARP offer in passing in Hidden City Ticketing Airfare Savings and Risks, I've had a few clients who have either taken advantage of the AARP offer or are considering it, for a flight in the November 2014-March 2015 time frame.
Here are the details:
- AARP members save $400 off a British Airways (or codeshare with American Airlines or Iberia) Business Class roundtrip flight from U.S. gateway cities
- Book by October 31, 2014
- Outbound travel must be November 1, 2014 – March 31, 2014
You don't even have to be a retired person to join AARP, which is just $16 per year. I put in my own birthdate and easily registered for AARP:
1. Go to AARP.org
Go to AARP.org and click on the “Join” button in the upper left, or go to this link.
2. Complete Your Membership and Register with a Password
After you fill in your details and pay $16, don't forget to register with a password on the right hand side of the confirmation page, since you'll need the password to login to the Brititish Airways AARP portal to access discounted fares.
3. Go to the British Airways AARP Page to Search for Fares
Go to the British Airways AARP Member Benefits page, click on the red “Log in to your AARP account” button and, once the pop up box appears, login using your email address and password. After logging in, you'll be taken to a British Airways AARP search page, where the discounted fares will automatically appear when searching.
Keep in mind that British Airways lists the price of the outbound and return flights separately, so you'll see each fare as $200 less than the fare you'd see if not logged in using your AARP credentials, for a total of $400 off a roundtrip.
I don't currently see any great fare sales, as there were back in September, but $400 is still significant savings if you were planning to travel anyway on British Airways from the U.S., or on a BA codeshare with AA or Iberia.
For example, a couple of my clients are considering a paid ticket to Israel to visit their grandchildren. If they were to go in late November, they'd be looking at over $3600 roundtrip for British Airways Business Class via London:
With the $400 discount, it would instead be $3277, which is quite a good deal given the length of the trip. But it's possible to save even more as a British Airways Visa holder, by applying promotion code CARDOFFERU before completing the purchase. That brings the cost down to $2949, thanks to the further 10% discount.
FAQ

Could I Book Premium Economy then Upgrade to Business Class with Avios?
Yes, you could, assuming there's upgrade award space and you have some Avios or are willing to transfer some AMEX Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Avios. Factor in 10,000 Avios each way between NYC and London, or about 12,500 Avios each way between most of the U.S. and Europe.
