3/12/24: Approved after 1 year
How Long Does it Take to Renew Global Entry in 2024? It can easily take a month or much longer for conditional approval, and that doesn't include the time to arrange an interview, so you don't want to wait until the last minute to renew. When I renewed my son's Global Entry a few months before it expired, it took 29 days–nearly 1 month–until conditional approval. In November 2023, FlyerTalker SuperEWR was told that Global Entry renewals have a backlog of 15 months (!)
Meanwhile, I'm happy to finally have my renewal approved, 12 months after applying back in March 2023. I do think that emailing may have helped. On 3/3/24, I sent a polite email to evus@cbp.dhs.gov noting that I'd submitted a renewal application one year ago but that it still showed as pending. I provided my Application ID and Global Entry number. Three days later, I received a form email noting the high demand and processing volumes, and that Global Entry applications are now taking 13-14 months on average to process, and that no anticipated date of completion could be provided. Yet two days after that, I received a TTP Application Status Change email, and when I logged into the portal, I saw that my renewal had been approved, no need for an interview. Bottom line: if you submitted a renewal and it's still pending about a year later, it can't hurt to email.
Also, fortunately, per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection FAQ, “If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date.”
FAQ
Which Credit Cards Reimburse Global Entry Application Fees?
The Global Entry application fee is $100 per person, but fortunately several cards reimburse this fee, once every 4-5 years:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve (every 4 years)
- AMEX Platinum (every 4 years)
- AMEX Business Platinum (every 4 years)
- Citi Prestige (every 5 years)
- Ritz-Carlton Rewards Card
- Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite card
When Can You Renew Global Entry?
You can renew Global Entry anytime you're within 1 year of expiration, although keep in mind that if you're planning to get reimbursed for the Global Entry fee, credit cards (see above) that reimburse you only do so once every 4-5 years. If you have multiple cards that reimburse for Global Entry, make sure to choose one that hasn't already been used recently, so that you'll be eligible for the fee reimbursement.
.
Do All Renewals Require Another Interview?
No, some applicants receive final approval for their renewal application without having to schedule an interview.
.
When Must Interviews Be Scheduled?
You must schedule your interview within 30 days of being notified of your conditional approval, but the actual interview can take place more than 30 days after you receive your conditional approval notification.
.
How Long do Global Entry Renewal Approvals Take?
Some people receive a final approval or conditional approval within a few days or a week. But with the high demand for Global Entry, there are a number of reports on FlyerTalk beyond mine where it's taken several months, although others managed to be approved in only a few days, for example:
- 2 days, 2/10/24 (stanj)
- Within about 1 week, 2/24 (sxpsxpsxp)
- >4 months, 2/5/24 (Cmprmyz)
- >7 months, 2/4/24 (SK)
- After 11 months for one member of a couple, after 2 months for the partner (JMontpelier)
- 11 months, 2/24 (kaiotes)
- >1 year, approval 3/1/24 after 377 days
- Nearly 14 months, 1/21/24 (Juanefny)
.
Is There Anything I Can Do to Expedite Renewal?
Probably not, which is why it's so important to apply *before* your current Global Entry membership expires. As long as you apply before your Global Entry expires, you have 24 months where you'll still enjoy Global Entry privileges. Just make sure you update your passport details on the Trusted Traveler site if you get a new passport. After 9 months of waiting, you could call the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Info line at 877-227-5511 (press 1 for English, then 1 for Trusted Traveler Programs) to ask about the status of your application and seek to expedite. Reports are that applications and renewals won't be expedited until 12 months of waiting (up from 4 and then 9 months, previously, due to high demand and swamped agents). You can also email evus@cbp.dhs.gov. I've just tried emailing, and will post an update if this helps.

I've Taken the Same Trips as My Partner; Why Did Only One of Us Need an Interview?
Global Entry and Customs and Border Protection officials have quite a bit of discretion, so your renewal applications may have been reviewed by different officers, who came to different conclusions about whether a renewal interview was needed. In addition to the countries visited or transited, job or residence changes can play a factor in conditional approval requiring an interview vs. full approval, with no interview needed.
If you recently renewed Global Entry, how long did it take until final approval or conditional approval?

Hi Hilary, I just renewed GE for myself and P. It took exactly 28 days, I was approved without the need of an interview, but P. needs the interview, and we visited the same countries etc, so it appears to be random. She received the conditional approval yesterday, and she was able to schedule the interview right away (later today) at MIA. By the way, with Amex Plat you can get the refund of the fee after 4 years, not 5 like the other cards
Yes, that’s exactly the agent discretion I was speaking of in the post; most likely your renewal applications were processed by different agents. I’ve updated the post to reflect the fact that the AMEX Platinum, AMEX Business Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve are all eligible for Global Entry reimbursement every 4 years.
Hi, I have Global Entry and reapplied about 5 weeks ago. I thought it would be faster to renew but so far have not heard back yet.
5 weeks is quite long to hear back; just to be sure you haven’t missed an email, have you logged into your account to double check if your status has changed?
Hi, I have reaplied 60 days ago… still pending status and no further answer or email… while this seems to be really long, I am not sure who to contact, or should I wait somewhat longer?
Thomas, that’s a long time–I would definitely contact your nearest Global Entry Enrollment Center, where you would plan to go for your interview (if needed). See the contact info at https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/enrollment-centers
I applied for renewal Dec 31 2018. No approval as of Feb 21, 2019. No email and no online notification in my account.
That’s while, although unfortunately there are other similar cases of it taking a long time, without email notification; see this Flyertalk post of someone who applied 11/29/18 and only saw when logging in on 2/14/18 that he’d been approved. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30794433-post1027.html Hope you’re approved soon, and consider contacting your local Global Entry Enrollment Center.
Applied for renewal March 12, still waiting on May 18! My husband applied a week or so ago and just got his renewal card!
Mary, sorry to hear it’s taking so long for your renewal, especially given how fast it was for your husband. Hope your approval comes soon, and consider contacting your local Global Entry Center.
Reading all other’s posts about how long it takes to renew. Well, for me it is now July 1st and I submitted my Global Entry renewal application on April 11th, over 3 months ago. I looked on-line and my status is only listed as “Pending Review”. Can I move this along by calling or going to a local Global entry office? There is one at O’Hare airport I could go to.
Lynn, at this point I would call your local Global Entry Office to try to find out what’s going on, and/or email your situation at https://help.cbp.gov/app/ask (select the Trusted Traveler Programs topic).
Hi Hilary, I’ve been waiting for >3 months for my GE renewal. Is there anyone I can call? This is crazy that there’s no feedback what so ever… Yes, I’ve looked. There’s no change in status.
Thanks,
Hi Hilary! I applied to renew my Global Entry on August 9, 2022 after discovering that it had expired a couple of years ago. It’s been almost two months and my status still says “Pending” without any other explanation. Who/where can I contact to get some attention to this renewal application?
Richard, it may have been too long since your previous Global Entry expired, such that you may have to submit a new application. I’d suggest contacting CBP to follow up on your renewal.
