Happy National Doughnut Day! We celebrated with Doughnut Plant doughnuts, which I've reviewed years ago, but there are new selections now, so it's time to update my review. We've been going to the Doughnut Plant since it was just one location on the Lower East Side, but fortunately, even with its expansion to the Chelsea, Brooklyn, and Queens locations, the doughnuts are still as I remember them from the early days.
Highlights are the fruit flavored cake doughnuts, but those who like yeast doughnuts will find plenty of choice as well. There are even filled yeast doughnuts, including Vanilla Doughnuts filled with Blackberry Jam, Peanut Butter Doughnuts filled with Blackberry Jam, and Coconut filled with Coconut cream.
The Doughnut Plant makes their own jam and sources locally, when possible organic, for its ingredients, so expect to pay a fair bit more than you would at your local Dunkin' Doughnuts. Here's the menu at the Chelsea location:
There's not a ton of seating, but there is some, and of course you can order some coffee or other drink to go with your doughnuts.
The Chelsea location is even open until midnight tonight, and they're giving away their new Grand Central mini vanilla cake doughnuts with each purchase on today, National Doughnut Day.
I'll be adding to this review as we try additional flavors, but here are our favorites to date:
1. Strawberry Cake Doughnut
We love the more intense flavor of the Doughnut Plant's cake doughnuts, and our current favorite is the Strawberry Cake Doughnut:
2. Creme Brulee Doughseed
I'm not a huge fan of actual creme brulee, unless it's a truly stellar version, but I do like the Creme Brulee Doughseed, or doughnut hole, with its crackly top and vanilla pastry cream inside. The ratio of cream to doughnut is just right as well.
3. Wild Blueberry Cake Doughnut
This is a close runner-up to the strawberry cake doughnut, with blueberries both in the cake doughnut and in the icing.
4. Pistachio Cream Filled Doughseed
There's a nice textural contrast with the pistachios in the icing, and it's filled with delicious pistachio cream. Not everyone loves pistachio of course, so if you prefer hazelnuts and chocolate, I can recommend that one as well.
5. Meyer Lemon Poppyseed Cake Doughnut
While I would have liked this to have even more tang, I do like the floral notes that Meyer Lemon adds to this cake doughnut.
What's your favorite Dougnut Plant doughnut?
