There's a 30,000 miles signup bonus for the Alaska Airlines Visa from Bank of America (not my link), per TravelSort reader Sil, who commented on the post Alaska Airlines: New Online Award Search for Emirates, Air France-KLM and Qantas. The 30K Alaska Visa offer gives the usual 25,000 miles signup bonus, plus 5000 miles for being a Bank of America customer. Here are the details:
- 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles upon account approval
- 5000 Alaska Airlines miles as a “Thank You” from Bank of America for being a customer
- Coach Companion Fare every year from $118
- 3 miles per dollar spent on Alaska Airlines tickets, vacation packages and cargo purchases
- $75 Annual fee is not waived the first year
Unfortunately, there's no further description of what qualifies as being a Bank of America customer, or when those 5000 bonus miles are supposed to post. If you do apply for this offer, please report back on your experience earning the 5000 bonus miles for being a Bank of America customer, and when the miles post.
I got the Alaska Airlines Visa last year, right before Alaska stopped allowing the companion fare to be used for domestic first class (see Alaska Airlines Companion Ticket: No More First Class) and I got the card primarily for the first class companion offer.
Is the 30K Alaska Visa still worth getting?
Only you can decide what it's worth given your travel needs, but I think it's worth it if at least a couple of the following are true:
- You regularly fly Alaska (since you can take advantage of 3X miles on all ticket purchases and build up Alaska miles more quickly)
- You fly American and/or Delta and credit those miles to Alaska
- Fly coach cross-country or to Hawaii and revenue fares tend to be very expensive (such that the coach companion fare saves money over other alternatives)
- You regularly churn Bank of America cards, since you can build up additional Alaska miles that way
- You're a Bank of America customer, so are definitely entitled to the 5000 extra bonus miles
- You're close to enough Alaska miles to redeem for an award. Don't forget that you can now redeem for one way partner awards on Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific (must call in to Alaska, Cathay isn't searchable online), Air France/KLM and other partners.
Any Cons?
Bank of America (similarly to Barclays) reserves the right to approve you for a lesser card, so be aware that you could be approved for a lesser card with a smaller bonus. If you don't want to risk a hard credit pool for this, don't apply. And, as mentioned above, there it's no longer possible to use the $118 companion fare for Alaska first class. The companion fare is only good on Alaska Airlines metal (no partners) and in coach.
What About the 25,000 Offer with $100 Statement Credit?
Unfortunately, this looks like sloppy airline IT: the landing page is still up, but when you click through, nowhere does it mention the $100 statement credit. I've seen on Flyertalk that someone was able to get the correct application to appear after making an Alaska Airlines purchase, and the $100 statement credit is likely intended to be shown to those who have purchased a ticket. Don't count on getting it if you just click from the landing page through to the application (with no mention made of the statement credit), though I'd love to hear from anyone who did that and successfully got the statement credit.
