Castello Banfi Il Borgo Location and Check-In

Castello Banfi Il Borgo is located in Poggio alle Mura in scenic Tuscany, with the closest train station “Chiusi – Chianciano Terme,” where car rentals are available. Count on a drive of about 1.5 hours, although depending on traffic and your driving you could get there in close to 1 hour.

Castello Banfi Il Borgo Double Room Riserva

We arrive early evening to Castello Banfi Il Borgo, which is truly a boutique property with just 9 rooms and 5 suites. After parking our car and walking up towards the castle, we took the path to the left which led to a gate with an intercom button.

Since there were guests who were exiting the gate as we went in, we arrived unannounced at reception, which is on the ground floor of the building on the right (in fact it was under our Double Riserva Room).

We were quickly checked in and escorted to our room, which was conveniently just up the stairs. The Double Riserva Room is a spacious 593 square feet, with a large and comfortable King size bed. Our son had his own little bed that was already made up for him.

I loved the way the TV was hidden behind a faux bookcase, thereby not marring the look of the room:

A half bottle of Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2010 welcomed us:

And I also was happy to see a tea kettle with complimentary biscotti on the other side of the living area:

There was ample closet space for us, although where was our son? Naturally he'd scouted out a great hiding spot, within one of the closet cubbies:

Included in the room rate are all soft drinks in the mini bar, including the conveniently chilled Aqua Panna–perfect after coming in from the summer heat.

The Double Room Riserva bathroom is incredibly spacious as well, with double sinks, separate bathtub and large glass enclosed walk-in shower, and plenty of plush white towels.

Even bath products are made by Castello Banfi Il Borgo: its vino-therapy line uses Sangiovese Brunello grapes.

Castello Banfi Il Borgo Outdoor Swimming Pool

A highlight for all of us, but especially our son (since he was not allowed to stay at Monastero Santa Rosa due to his age) was Castello Banfi Il Borgo's outdoor swimming pool, with a gorgeous view of the Tuscan countryside.

I was happy to see that some of the lounge chairs were on the grass and in the shade, so while the munchkin played in the pool with my husband, I was able to get some work done on my computer. The free WiFi worked well and was sufficiently fast when needing to upload files.

Castello Banfi Il Borgo Breakfast and Dining

I'll discuss Castello Banfi Il Borgo's breakfast and our dinner at La Sala dei Grappoli, as well as our wine tasting at L'Enoteca in a separate post.

The Verdict

We enjoyed a fantastic stay at Castello Banfi Il Borgo, which my clients who have stayed here have also enjoyed. We loved our spacious Double Riserva Room, the gorgeous views, the private swimming pool (we were the only ones there when we swam), the delicious Tuscan food, and of course the winery tour and wine tasting, which I'll cover in future posts. As this is a small boutique property, I highly recommend making reservations well in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you've stayed at Castello Banfi Il Borgo, what was your experience?
