Hotel de Rome Location and Check-In
I love when city hotels are easily reachable via public transportation, and this is the case with Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome, in Berlin. From Tegel Airport (TXL), just take the airport express bus to the Staatsoper stop. It takes about 30-35 minutes, and drops you off at Bebelplatz, where you simply cross the square and walk right into the Hotel de Rome. And it costs less than 3 Euros. Or, you can of course take a taxi, which will take you to the hotel in about 20 minutes, assuming no traffic.
Since I arrived fairly early in the morning after my red eye flight on Air Berlin, my room wasn't ready yet, but I was able to go down to the hotel's spa for a refreshing shower and change of clothes, then work in the lobby until my room was ready.
The Spa attendant was friendly and immediately offered me a glass of water and a ginger tea, complete with honey, fresh strawberry and blueberries, which I appreciated, since I find ginger tea has a restorative effect when traveling and also helps settle any queasiness.
Hotel de Rome Junior Suite
Since the hotel's regular rooms were quite busy at the time of my visit, I was fortunate enough to be upgraded to a more spacious Junior Suite that was ready earlier. It was a spacious 540 square feet in size, with a nice sized living area.
The King bed was very comfortable, and an extra bed was quickly set up for my son, for when he and my husband arrived.
The bathroom wasn't large, and just had a single vanity, but did have a separate glass enclosed shower as well as a bathtub.
Bath products were by Malin + Goetz exclusively for Rocco Forte:
Our room just faced the interior courtyard, which was perfectly fine for our overnight and proved to be very quiet, which is what we needed after our red eye flights. For a longer stay, I'd recommend requesting a room or Junior Suite with a view, for example of St. Hedwig's Cathedral.
Rooftop Terrace
Even if you don't manage to get a room or suite with a view, I highly recommend venturing up to the Rooftop Terrace for the views, and perhaps staying for drinks or even a light bite. We already had dinner plans, but my son strongly protested leaving, given the lovely views, music, and cool vibe.
Hotel de Rome Spa and Swimming Pool
In addition to the fitness center, spa, and changing rooms, the Hotel de Rome offers a swimming pool. Note that it's keep at a tropical temperature, so I found it too warm to work there by the pool, but it's perfect if you want to relax and take a dip–you definitely don't have to worry about a too chilly pool or poolside temperature here.
Hotel de Rome Breakfast
Don't miss your Virtuoso complimentary full breakfast at the La Banca Restaurant at Hotel de Rome, as it's quite a treat. While we sat inside with a view of the garden courtyard, if we'd had more time to linger, we would have sat in the garden itself:
There's an extensive cold buffet offering of fresh fruit, cheeses, smoked salmon, breakfast meats, yogurts, cereals, dried fruits, breads and pastries:
And additionally, there are hot menu options as well from a menu, cooked to order. We didn't have time to sample the hot items, but everything we tried, from the fresh mango to the smoked salmon and cheeses to the pastries and the fresh squeezed juices were of superb quality.
The Verdict
While our short overnight didn't leave us with time to explore, the Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome is in a great location, close to Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and nightlife. We easily walked to a great local restaurant, which I'll describe in a future post.
Our Junior Suite was spacious and the beds were very comfortable, and service at the front desk, spa, and restaurant was uniformly excellent. The only real detractor was the rather small bathroom. Among European countries, Germany is known for its hearty breakfasts, and breakfast was certainly a treat and of very high quality.
