Nov. 1 Update: This offer has now expired.
The 50K CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select bonus offer ends today, October 31, 2015, as noted on the Best Travel Credit Cards page, but I thought I'd remind readers, given how valuable AAdvantage miles are right now. Here are the offer details:
- Earn 50K AAdvantage miles after spending $3000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
- Earn 2 AAdvantage miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
- Earn 2X AAdvantage miles per dollar spent at select office supply stores, telecommunication service providers, and car rental agencies
- Earn 1 AAdvantage mile per dollar on all other purchases
- First checked bag fee on domestic American Airlines itineraries for you and up to four travel companions
- Board with Group 1 on American Airlines domestic flights
- Annual fee waived the first year; thereafter $95 annual fee
As regular readers know, although we earned over 400,000 AAdvantage miles last year, we also ended up buying some AAdvantage miles with a 60% bonus earlier this year, to redeem for Qantas First Class on the A380 and Etihad A380 First Class Apartment Awards.
FAQ
I Previously Had a CitiBusiness AAdvantage Card; Am I Eligible?
The offer terms state that it is not available to if you already have a CitiBusiness AAdvantage account, and that “this offer is valid only for first time CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage®Platinum Select® cardmembers who apply pursuant to this offer for an account by October 31, 2015.”
To me this indicates that those who had an older version of the CitiBusiness AAdvantage card that was NOT a Platinum Select could be eligible. That said, I'm not Citi, so I can't say for sure if you'll earn the bonus miles or not. If you value AAdvantage miles and can stand the hard pull, however, I believe it's worth applying, then confirming the bonus offer after you receive the card, if approved.
How Does the Free Checked Bag Benefit Work? Do I Need to Pay for the Ticket with the Card?
No; it's a benefit of having the card, but you do not need to pay for the American Airlines ticket with the card. You do need to have your CitiBusiness AAdvantage account open at least 7 days prior to air travel, and you also need to have attached your AAdvantage number to the reservation at least 7 days prior to travel. If you want the benefit to apply to companions, they all must be with you together on the same reservation (same record locator) to enjoy the benefit.
Also note that this benefit only applies to domestic AA flights, not international American Airlines flights.
Isn't a Companion Ticket Certificate Also a Benefit?
Yes, there is a companion certificate offered to cardholders who spend $30,000 or more during your cardmembership year, but it's really not worth it, as it's just a domestic economy companion ticket that you still have to pay $99 for. Most everyone should be able to put that $30,000 spend to better use meeting minimum spend for other signup bonus offers.
