Best Munich 5-Star Luxury and Boutique Hotels

Munich is already a favorite with beer lovers at Oktoberfest and year-round, but this thriving and very livable city also has plenty to offer even non beer drinkers. There's of course the bustling Marienplatz, Munich's central square, from which you can explore the old town with its atmospheric churches, landmarks, and boutiques. Don't miss the Glockenspiel clock tower of the New Town Hall at noon, where you can watch life-size figures memorialize some of Baviarian history. Foodies will definitely want to visit the Viktualienmarkt, an expansive daily farmers market with everything from regional sausages and cheese and delectable pastries to fresh produce and flowers. A favorite activity for many visitors is taking a guided bike tour through the city and its lovely parks, such as the English Garden. At the end of the day, retreat to a beautiful room or suite in one of our favorite Munich luxury and boutique hotels–each offers a peaceful oasis to relax and recharge.

Mandarin Oriental Munich
The Mandarin Oriental Munich is often viewed by Mandarin Oriental fans as one of the brand's finest. It's not its size, since it's if anything more boutique-like, with fewer than 80 rooms and suites. Rather its the hotel's perfect city center location, the panoramic views from the rooftop pool, sundeck and select rooms and suites, and above all, the excellent staff. Service in even  German luxury hotels sometimes falls short of what travelers expect, especially if they're used to the high service levels in top Asian hotels; but the Mandarin Oriental's staff is exceptional. Rooms offer ultra-comfortable beds, heated floors and towel racks in the bathroom, and evening turndown service. We'd recommend springing for a suite or at least a junior suite if at all possible, since Superior Rooms vary in size and can be as small as 327 sq. ft, while Superior Junior Suites offer 545-600 square feet of space, Molton Brown amenities, complimentary WiFi and Nespresso machines. Reserve one of the hotel's Mercedes Benz bicycles to go for a self-powered spin through the city.

Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel

If the Mandarin Oriental Munich is too pricey, our favorite luxury hotel that also provides great value is Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel. It's not quite as central as The Mandarin Oriental, but still less than a 10 minute walk from the sights of the old town, and situated by the peaceful and lovely Botanic Gardens. We especially like that Classic and Deluxe Rooms are a spacious 430 square feet and also offers a French Balcony that with views of the historical city. The look is understated modern luxury, and is complemented by the very attentive yet friendly staff. Children receive their own special welcome amenities, from a stuffed animal or toy to coloring book, coloring pencils, child-size bathrobe and slippers. Don't miss one of the best buffet breakfasts you're likely to have in Germany, or the tranquil indoor pool.

Hotel Munchen Palace
For those seeking a more authentic neighborhood boutique hotel who enjoy staying in a neighborhood rather than the city center, Hotel Munchen Palace is a great bet, set in the Bogenhausen Quarter near the English Garden. Superior and Deluxe Rooms are cozy at 247 squre feet and 269 square feet respectively, so a Junior Suite is a better choice for more space. Rooms and suites overlooking the hotel's private garden, some with balconies, are particularly nice. Style is clean and simple, but with nice touches such as parquet flooring, a pillow menu, complimentary bottled water, and free WiFi. While not as lavish as at The Charles, the breakfast buffet, included in most rates, is tasty and includes eggs cooked to order. Borrow one of the hotel's four bicycles to explore the English Garden or the rest of Munich.

Getting to Munich with Frequent Flyer Miles and Points

Here are some of the best ways to get to Munich in first class and business class using frequent flyer miles or loyalty points:

1. Lufthansa First Class (last minute) or new Business Class
If you have the flexibility to take a last minute flight to Munich you could take Lufthansa first class, for example from NYC (JFK), Washington DC Dulles (IAD), Charlotte (CLT), Detroit, or Montreal to Munich. You can sometimes book Lufthansa First Class awards 15 days out, not just 14 days as was previously thought. If you're flying from Dulles, you can try Lufthansa's New Business Class (see Lufthansa's New Business Class Rollout and Routes). If you want to check whether your Lufthansa flight will have the New Business Class, see Which Lufthansa Flights Have New First Class and New Business Class.

Don't forget that when booking a roundtrip, you can use United Free One Ways to Maximize Your Award.

2. British Airways First Class or Business Class via London
If you need to plan ahead and want to fly a great first class product, British Airways is a good choice if you can make peace with the high fuel surcharges going through London.

3. Air Berlin via Berlin
You can use AA miles or BA Avios to fly Air Berlin in Business Class NYC to Berlin, then Berlin to Munich. For the best current American AAdvantage card offers, see Best Travel Credit Cards

4. Singapore Airlines First Class to Moscow, then Lufthansa or S7 to Munich

As Ben wrote in the 15 Best First and Business Class Airline Awards in 2012, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points or SPG points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and redeem 114,750 KrisFlyer miles and about $400 in taxes for a Singapore Airlines first class roundtrip ticket to Moscow. From Moscow to Munich, you'll need to redeem United miles or other Star Alliance miles for Lufthansa, or American AAdvantage miles for S7. The Moscow-Munich flight is about 3.5 hours, so this route is for those who don't mind (or want) to take the scenic route, or who want to fly Singapore Airlines. Keep in mind that if you want to leave the airside part of Moscow's Domodedovo Airport, or even stopover in Moscow for a couple of days, you'll need a Russian Visa. See our 3-Year Russian Visa Application Requirements and Tips.
