60K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select (Targeted)

60K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Bonus Offer (Targeted)

A 60K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard offer is targeted to some AAdvantage members, as a special seasonal offer. Here's the offer my son received, even though we can't of course sign him up for it (though he was excited to receive it and crestfallen to learn that he couldn't just save the offer until he's able to apply for his own cards).

Here are the offer details:

  • Earn 60,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after spending $3000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
  • Offer expires 12/31/15
  • Earn 2 AAdvantage miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
  • Earn 1 AAdvantage mile per dollar spent for all other spend
  • Earn 10% of your redeemed AAdvantage miles back, up to 10,000 AAdvantage miles each calendar year
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • First checked bag free on domestic travel for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation
  • Group 1 boarding on AA domestic flights
  • $95 annual fee waived for the first 12 months

FAQ

Am I Eligible for This Targeted Offer if I Previously Had a Citi AAdvantage card?

The catch, even for those targeted for this 60K offer, is that the terms and conditions state: “If you are an existing Citi AAdvantage cardmember, you are not eligible for this offer on your existing account.” Now, that could be read as simply saying that if you currently have a Citi AAdvantage card of any type, you can't somehow get an additional 60K bonus miles on the account you already have open with Citi. That would be the logical interpretation.

But it's possible that Citi will not award any bonus miles if you're an existing Citi AAdvantage cardholder of any type of card, even though this very stringent restriction would rule out many applicants. I can't say for sure which applies, but if you're targeted for the offer and don't currently have a Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select, I think it's worth the hard pull to apply. Most likely, those that are targeted for this 60K offer haven't had a Citi AAdvantage card ever, or at least not for a long time.

How Does the 10% AAdvantage Miles Rebate Work?

The 10% AAdvantage miles rebate is a nice perk of the card, but I do get questions about it from readers. To clarify, it is *not* a discount on the miles you pay for an AAdvantage award; you still need to have the full number of AAdvantage miles in your account for the award you want to redeem for.

Rather, this benefit works as a rebate. For example, if you redeem 67,500 AAdvantage miles for Cathay Pacific First Class from the U.S. to Bali via Hong Kong, you would receive 6750 miles back after the redemption. Terms state to allow 6-8 weeks after the award redemption for the rebated miles to post, although typically they post faster than that. The maximum rebate in a calendar year is 10,000 AAdvantage miles per AAdvantage account, so even if you have more than one Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, you won't earn more than 10,000 miles back as a rebate.

What's the Best Offer If I Wasn't Targeted for the 60K Offer?

The best public offer is the 50K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, also with a $3000 minimum spend. And if you have a business, there's also the 50K CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard. See Best Travel Credit cards for current application links.

How Do I Apply Online if I Received a Targeted Offer?

If you were targeted, your offer will include a unique invitation number. Go to citi.com/applynowAAdvantageCard to enter this invitation.

Can't I Transfer Points to AAdvantage?

Unless you have SPG Starpoints, probably not. One of the reasons I find Citi AAdvantage cards worth applying for is that it's not possible to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points or Citi ThankYou points to AAdvantage. Citi AAdvantage credit cards are key to my family being able to redeem for Qantas A380 First Class, JAL First Class, JAL Sky Suite Business Class, Etihad First Class and airberlin Business Class, at reasonable award chart rates.
