Waymo Expanding to Wine Country, San Diego, London

Waymo driverless taxis will expand to California Wine Country and the East Bay, to San Diego, and even London.

The California DMV has posted Waymo' amended permit, which authorizes the autonomous vehicle company to operate across these areas (depicted on the maps below) though the company would need separate approval from the California Public Utilities Commission before paying passengers are allowed to book rides in those areas.

In the Bay Area, Waymo is approved to serve Napa, Sonoma, St. Helena, Petaluma and Healdsburg, Sacramento, and the East Bay destinations of Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and Brentwood.

Waymo is approved to expand out from Los Angeles through Orange County all the way down to San Diego.

No date has been released yet for this separate approval or commencement of the expanded Bay Area operations, although Waymo expects to start offering service in San Diego in mid-2026:

“We appreciate the DMV’s approval of our expanded fully autonomous operations . . . we’re proud to provide over 1 million safe, reliable, magical rides every month in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and we’re looking forward to opening our service to more Californians. Our next stop in the Golden State will be San Diego, where we’ll welcome our first riders in mid-2026.”

Waymo currently operates in San Francisco, parts of Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and Austin (via Uber). Waymo has also started allowing freeway rides across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Waymo already provides airport pickups and dropoffs at Phoenix Airport (PHX), and Waymo will soon take riders to and from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose International (SJC).

In addition to San Diego, in 2026 will launch service in Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Orlando.

Across the pond, Waymo will also expand into London in 2026 under a piloting scheme. Heidi Alexander, the UK Secretary of State for Transport, noted that “Boosting the AV sector will increase accessible transport options alongside bringing jobs, investment, and opportunities to the UK.”
