W Verbier, Switzerland Review, Photos, Video

The W Verbier is known as an excellent ski-in, ski-out alpine luxury resort, but it also makes a wonderful base for summer hiking and mountain biking in the Swiss canton of Valais. Read on for our review, photos, and video.

W Verbier Location and Getting There

If flying into Geneva GVA (served by nonstop SWISS flights from New York JFK and by flights from many other European cities), the drive takes ~2 hours. From Zurich ZRH, the drive is 3-4 hours.

Alternatively, from Geneva, take the train (IR90) to Martigny, then transfer to the R81 train to Le Châble Station (~2 hours 20 minutes), and finally, to the gondola/cable car from Le Châble to Verbier, which only takes ~10 minutes and treats you to an aerial view of Verbier.

Conveniently, if arriving by gondola, the W Verbier is only a 2 minute walk from the station.

There's also complimentary shuttle service (on a first come, first served basis) around Verbier.

Summer temperatures are comfortable: mid-high 60s, so it was refreshing to have some citrus-infused water while checking in.

Spectacular Room, W Verbier

Wonderful, Fabulous, and Spectacular Rooms are all the same size, 387 square feet, but differ in terms of view. Rooms have a cozy feel, with wooden beams and doors and built-in shelves, although with pops of color (this is a W Hotel, after all).

Apart from the toilet, which is in its own separate chamber behind a wooden door, most of the bathroom is open plan, which could be an issue if one of you needs to go to the bathroom or use the sink at night.

Bath products are MOMO by Davines, which are okay, although I disliked the artificial colors and preservatives and ended up using my own toiletries.

Entry-level Wonderful rooms have no view, so I recommend not reserving this category. Fabulous Rooms have a mountain view but from lower floors, so most of the view is of other neighboring chalets. I suggest reserving at least a Spectacular Room, as these are on higher floors, with better views of the valley and mountains over the rooftops of the surrounding chalets.

Spa, W Verbier

The spa features an indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool, as well as several saunas and steam rooms and a jacuzzi. I enjoyed relaxing in the heated swimming pool and jacuzzi. The only disappointment was that hotel guests aren't given use of a locker; those are apparently reserved for members, so don't bring any valuables with you if you plan to use the changing room.

The Verdict

We really enjoyed our stay at the W Verbier. The views and scenery, both from the hotel and while hiking, was magnificent, and the hotel was cooler in the evening than the other Verbier hotel we stayed at (air conditioning isn't permitted in Verbier). The bed was firm, but more comfortable than the firmest European beds. The breakfast buffet was very good, if not as luxurious as, say, the top luxury hotels in Paris. And the indoor-outdoor pool and jacuzzi in the Spa were great to unwind in, after a long day of hiking and outdoors activities.
