Get 20% Extra on SPG transfers to American Airlines AAdvantage or SPG to US Air Dividend Miles through July 31, 2014. Since there's a built-in 25% bonus of 5000 miles when transferring in increments of 20,000 Starpoints, the 20% extra mileage bonus gives you an effective 50% SPG transfer bonus to AAdvantage miles or to US Air Dividend Miles:
20,000 SPG points = 30,000 AAdvantage miles or US Air Dividend Miles
40,000 SPG points = 60,000 AAdvantage miles or US Air Dividend Miles
60,000 SPG points = 90,000 AAdvantage miles or US Air Dividend Miles
Of course, if you've been able to take advantage of the 100K Bonus for the Citi Executive AAdvantage Card (see Citi 100K Executive AAdvantage Offer Still Available Plus Expiring Offers) you'll likely want to hang onto your SPG points for other transfers or redemptions, since the 100K Citi Executive AAdvantage bonus is a cheaper way of generating AAdvantage miles and Starpoints are harder to come by, unless you have high spend (or run a business) on one or more SPG AMEX cards, or stay at a lot of Starwood hotels.
Similarly, you can easily get 40,000 US Air Dividend Miles after first purchase with The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® (note that the $89 annual fee is not waived).
But not everyone is a U.S. citizen or qualifies for the Citi AAdvantage card signup bonuses or the US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®, so this could be a good opportunity to top up an AAdvantage account if they have plenty of SPG points.
FAQ
Are There Any Limits to How Many SPG Starpoints Can Be Converted to AAdvantage Miles with the Bonus?
No–you can transfer multiple times during the promotion. As always, you'll want to transfer in increments of 20,000 points in order to get both the usual 5000 bonus, plus the extra 20% bonus, for a total of 30,000 AAdvantage miles for each 20,000 SPG points transferred.
How Many SPG Starpoints Can Be Transferred Per Day?
Starwood Preferred Guest permits up to 79,999 Starpoints to be transferred within a 24 hour period. Because of this, you'll want to transfer a maximum of 60,000 Starpoints in a 24 hour period, which will become 90,000 AAdvantage miles. Also, only one airline transfer is allowed per 24 hour period; you can't transfer 20,000 SPG points now, wait a few minutes, and transfer another 20,000 SPG points–you would have to wait 24 hours to make another transfer.
How Long Will It Take the Miles to Post?
Bonus miles will post to the AAdvantage member's account within 7 business days. Because of this, you may not see the miles post before a hold expires on an award (AAdvantage awards can be held for a maximum of 5 days).
Can I Transfer SPG Points to a Family or Friend's AAdvantage or Dividend Miles Account?
No, for AAdvantage transfers: both the Starwood Preferred Guest and AAdvantage account must have identical member names. Even if you're transferring to your own account, *make sure the name used in your SPG and AAdvantage accounts match each other exactly.* Anyone who has changed their name, for example after getting married, should be especially careful to double check this.
Currently it's possible to transfer SPG points into someone else's US Air Dividend Miles Account, but this could always change.
Won't There Be an AAdvantage and/or Dividend Miles Devaluation Later This Year?
While I have no inside information, I do expect the AAdvantage award chart to devalue later this year, in addition to the recent elimination of AAdvantage Explorer awards and of stopovers / free AA one ways. So don't stock up on AAdvantage miles or transfer SPG points speculatively; I would only transfer to top up for an AAdvantage award you plan to redeem soon. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a further US Airways Dividend Miles devaluation later this year, before the two frequent flyer programs combine in 2015.
Do you plan to book any AAdvantage or Dividend Miles awards soon?
