San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is Requiring All Airport Workers to Be Fully Vaccinated, effective immediately, September 21, 2021. The new mandate, which was announced by San Francisco Mayor London Breed, includes airport, service, shops and concessions, and construction workers at SFO. Those who are exempted for medical reasons or due to religious beliefs will be required to be tested weekly for COVID-19.
Airlines and contractors must report regularly on the status of vaccinations. Fines may be imposed for those who do not comply, according to the SFO Airport Rules and Regulations, which start at $1000 for a first offense.
Airport Director Ivar Satero noted that the airport has “an obligation to provide a safe airport facility for the traveling public and our on-site employees,” especially in light of upcoming holiday season travel.
SFO continues to offer free vaccination at the SFO Medical Clinic, using the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) single-dose vaccine. The vaccine is available to all individuals 18 years and older, regardless of nationality or country of residence. The clinic is open daily 8am-5pm, and appointments are recommended.
San Francisco is one of the most vaccinated travel destinations, with 81 percent of eligible residents (12 years and older) fully vaccinated, and 87 percent who have had at least one dose of vaccine. The city has mandated vaccinations for all city workers, and along with NYC, San Francisco has a vaccination mandate for indoor dining.
As with all U.S. airports, SFO also continues to mandate face masks. Everyone age 2 and older must wear a face mask while in the airport, and the mask must be properly worn so that it covers both the nose and mouth. Failure to do so may result in removal from the airport, denial of re-entry, and civil penalties of $500 – $1,000 for a first offense and $1,000 – $3,000 for repeat offenses.
