Kauai Remains Opted Out of the Hawaii Safe Travels Program for Trans-Pacific Arrivals, but Mayor Derek Kawakami has opted Kauai back into Safe Travels for inter-island travelers only, and this request has been approved by Governor Ige. Here's what that means:
- Starting January 5, 2021, inter-island travelers may take a COVID-19 PCR test from one of the approved State of Hawaii travel partners no more than 72 hours prior to their flight to Kauai. If the test result is negative and received before the flight to Kauai, then no quarantine is required.
- Inter-island travelers must have been in the State of Hawaii for at least 72 hours before flying to Kauai (meaning that trans-Pacific arrivals MUST still quarantine for at least 10 days if Kauai is their first destination, unless they stay in a designated resort bubble and take a COVID-19 test on the 3rd day, which comes back negative).
- Kauai does NOT permit travelers who are subject to the 10-day quarantine to do so in a rental or Airbnb; everyone who is subject to quarantine MUST stay in a hotel or motel.
Kauai District Health Officer Dr. Berreman noted that “The rate of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths on the mainland continues to increase…it is just not safe at this time to allow trans-Pacific travel to Kauai without additional safeguards.”
