Hotel Hassler in Rome has a storied past, having opened in the late 19th century, entirely rebuilt in 1939, requisitioned by the U.S. Air Force as its Rome headquarters during WWII, reopened in 1947, and renovated several times, most recently in 2018.
Hotel Hassler Rome Location
Hotel Hassler is located at Piazza della Trinità dei Monti, 6, at the top of the Spanish Steps, hence its nickname “Stairway to Heaven.” The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the Roman Forum and a 25 minute walk from the Colosseum. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is about a 35 minute to 1 hour drive, depending on traffic, while Roma Termini train station is a 10-20 minute drive.
As our stay was in late November, the hotel had just put up its holiday decorations.

Grand Deluxe Room
We don't recommend reserving the entry-level Classic Room (~250 sq. ft.) or even the next room category up, the Deluxe Room (~300 sq. ft.) which are both on the small side, and where all rooms (Classic) or many rooms (Deluxe) face the garden and can be quite dark and depressing. Instead, reserve a Grand Deluxe Room well in advance and request a city view as well as a step out balcony (only a few of the Grand Deluxe Rooms have a balcony). The view and balcony was unquestionably the highlight of our Grand Deluxe Room:
.
The bed can be a king or twinned, as two separate beds.
.
There's a small work desk with the flat screen TV above it and doors to the step out balcony to the left of it.
.
We loved the high ceilings, which made the ~375 sq. ft. (35 sq. m.) room feel even more spacious, and the walk-in closet.
.
The bathroom, in green marble, featured both a walk-in shower and a soaking tub, double sinks, and a separate toilet chamber.
.
Note that the snacks and red wine above the mini bar are part of the honor bar, they'll be charged to your room if consumed.
.
Unfortunately there's no coffee maker or espresso machine in the room, as at Hotel de la Ville. I was, however, able to borrow a hot water kettle so that I could make tea. We were later brought a bowl of fresh fruit, as well as champagne to celebrate my friend's birthday (note that the flowers and mandarin oranges in the photo are ones I bought for my friend, not courtesy of the hotel).

Turndown service provided chocolates in a silver box:

Hotel Hassler Breakfast
Salone Eva is open for breakfast from 7am, serving a continental plus style buffet. The room itself is elegant, although it lacked the natural light of Mosaico at the Hotel de la Ville. I was disappointed that the fresh fruit options were so limited, with just orange, pineapple, kiwi and melon for the cut fruit, and a few whole fruit in the center. At the Hotel de la Ville there were fresh strawberries, blackberries, and red currants.
.
There was smoked salmon and three types of cheeses:
.
The salad fixings, especially the cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, were good.
.
While there were a number of pastries, they were quite dry and uninspired. Save your sweet allotment for gelato outside the hotel.
.
What was good were the Sterzing Vipiteno Alpen Joghurt yogurts and the espresso drinks.
.
Fitness Room and Spa
There's a small fitness room and spa on the third floor; the spa has a sauna and steam room, but no pool or whirlpool. The real attraction is the spa terrace off of the fitness center, which had an even better view than the one from our room. If you don't have a good city view from your room or suite, be sure to take in the view from the terrace, accessible by walking through the fitness room.

The Verdict
Hotel Hassler enjoys a fantastic central location at the top of the Spanish Steps, and we were impressed with the attentive and friendly service. Having seen the entry level Classic Rooms, however, I don't recommend reserving anything lower than a Grand Deluxe Room, and booking early with a request for a city view. Better yet, reserve a Grand Deluxe Suite Hassler or higher category suite for memorable views. The buffet breakfast was good, but we preferred that of the nearby Hotel de la Ville, which offers outdoor seating in warmer months and where included in the buffet are delicious hot dishes made to order such as the carbonara omelet. The Hotel de la Ville also has a more complete spa offering.
