FAQ

So Is American Not Merging with US Airways?

I've no idea whether the US Airways-American merger will really happen in light of the DOJ suit, but if I had to pick an outcome, it would be that the merger doesn't happen, as weird as that seems given how fast it was previously moving. If American's goal is to entice other frequent flyers but non-elites with AAdvantage to switch to AA to both earn elite status and take advantage of SWUs (system wide upgrades) it seems a good time to do it. As attractive as the 30K Executive Platinum offer is, it's hard to imagine a flyer who rarely flies bothering to fly 30K miles in 4 months to earn that status, so AA could well help shift some lucrative business frequent flyer spend to American for the last months of this year, plus ongong travel in 2014 to take advantage of elite status perks.

So How Many Trips Do 30,000 Elite Qualifying Miles Equate to?

Naturally it depends on the trip, but it would be roughly 3 roundtrips from the East Coast to Hawaii, or about 6 coast to coast roundtrips.
