Disney World Price Increase: Save on Disney World Tickets or Earn Bonus Points

Disney World increased ticket prices on February 23, 2014, with one day passes to the Magic Kingdom increasing to $99 + tax, total of $105.44, and a three day pass increasing to $274 + tax, total of $291.81.

Fortunately, there are still a few ways to buy discount Disney World tickets or even get your ticket price refunded as statement credit, with the right credit card.

1. Florida Residents: Discounted Disney World Tickets

If you're actually a Florida resident, you're in luck, since there are some great discounts to Walt Disney World available. Don't try this if you're not actually a Florida resident however; even if you know someone who is a resident and is willing to buy discounted tickets for you, there's biometic scanning, precisely to prevent this kind of arbitrage, so non Florida residents won't be able to get into Disney World using a discounted Florida resident pass. Also see the Mouse Saver page detailing the current Discover Disney Ticket offer through 6/6/14, and the various discounted Florida Resident Disney World Ticket options.

2. Buy Discounted Disney World Tickets with Working Advantage Through March 7

If your company offers Working Advantage discounts, which is quite common with larger employers, you can take advantage of lower Disney World ticket prices through this Friday March 7. While technically you can buy through March 8, I highly recommend buying on Friday March 7 as weekend sales may not be processed until the next business day, by which time the discounted prices will no longer be available. A few price examples:

  • 1 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $103 (Adult) / $94 (Child)
  • 2 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $199.80 (Adult) / $186. 74 (Child)
  • 3 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $271.45 (Adult) / $249.12 (Child)
  • 5 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $281.28 (Adult) / $264.47 (Child)

3. Buy Discounted Disney World Tickets with the Mouse Savers Discount on Undercover Tourist

  • 3 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $276.45 (Adult)
  • 5 Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $290.95 (Adult)
  • 5 Day Magic Your Way No Expiration: $438.95 (Adult)
  • 7 Day Magic Your Way No Expiration: $538.95 (Adult)

4. Buy Discounted Disney World Tickets with a Military Discount If You Qualify

Active and retired military are eligible for slightly discounted Disney World tickets, although it's about equivalent to the retail price less the tax, so roughly a 6.5% discount. See the Mouse Savers page for details.

Earn Miles and Points for Disney World Tickets

If you're buying one or two day Disney World tickets, for which there are typically no discounts except for Working Advantage, you could instead try to maximize miles and points earned.

1. Charge Your Disney World Ticket to Your Hotel Room

Even if your hotel charges you a couple of dollars to do this, you can at least maxmize your points by using a credit card that bonuses your hotel spend. For example:
  • Hyatt Hotels: Either pay with existing Hyatt gift cards or check certificates that you bought last year at an effective 16.5% discount (see Hyatt Discount on Hyatt Gift Cards and Check Certificates) or use an SPG Business AMEX with 5% AMEX OPEN savings as that, combined with earning 1 SPG point per dollar, is more lucrative than using a Hyatt credit card.
  • Starwood Hotels: Pay with your SPG AMEX and earn 4-5 SPG points per dollar (2 from the SPG AMEX, and 2-3 depending on whether you're a regular or elite SPG member)
  • Marriott Hotels: Pay with your Marriott Premier Rewards Visa and earn 5 points per dollar for Marriott spend, in addition to the Marriott Rewards points you earn as a Marriott Rewards member.
2. Buy Disney Gift Cards to Earn Miles or Points: Use Them to Buy Disney World Tickets
  • 5X: Buy Disney Gift Cards at Office Max with an Ink Card – If you're lucky, your local Office Max has Disney gift cards, and you can buy them with your Ink Bold or Ink Plus to earn 5X
  • 4.5X: Buy Disney Gift Cards at a Grocery Store with AMEX EveryDay Preferred and 50% Bonus – As of April 2 you'll be able to apply for the AMEX EveryDay Preferred card, which earns 3X at grocery stores up to an annual limit of $6000, and after 30 transactions in a billing cycle offers a 50% bonus, bringing the bonus to 4.5X.
  • 2X: Buy Disney Gift Cards at a Grocery Store with AMEX Premier Rewards Gold  – If your local grocery store offers Disney gift cards, you could use your AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card to earn 2X, or any other credit card that earns a grocery store bonus.
What other ways do you recommend for buying discounted Disney World tickets, getting refunds, or earning miles and points from ticket purchases?
