Complimentary Overnight Hotel Stay: Which Airlines?

 

Which airlines offer a complimentary hotel stay for an overnight or long connection? A TravelSort reader commented on Facebook “Do you know…if we are eligible for a [complimentary] hotel overnight stay via SWISS as the connecting flight is 13 hours later?”

 

Unfortunately SWISS does NOT pay for a complimentary hotel stay, even for long connections. Lufthansa used to offer a complimentary day room at the Kempinski in Frankfurt and Munich for Lufthansa First Class passengers, but that stopped at the end of 2012.

 

Here are the airlines that still provide a complimentary hotel stay for long connections, and the requirements.

 

Economy Class: 10+ hours between Turkish Airlines flights

Business Class: 7+ hours between Turkish Airlines flights

• Both the inbound flight and the outbound flight must be on Turkish Airlines
• Only applies if there is no shorter connection available
• Cannot book hotel in advance
• Must be able to enter Turkey (have visa or be from a visa exempt country)
• Ok for the inbound and outbound Turkish Airlines flights to be on separate tickets
• Award tickets (even using United or other Star Alliance miles) also qualify

 

Economy Class: >8 hours and less than 24 hours between qualifying Emirates or Qantas flights

Business Class and Emirates First Class: >6 hours and less than 24 hours between qualifying Emirates or Qantas flights

• The inbound and outbound flights must be on Emirates or Qantas metal
• Only applies if there is no shorter connection available
• Emirates Skywards Saver Award Tickets (and partner awards on Emirates) NOT eligible; must be a 100% Flex Reward to qualify
• Must be 18 years or older, or if younger than 18, traveling with another passenger age 18 or older
• Service is subject to availability

An unpublished benefit of flying a paid ticket on Korean Air via Seoul Incheon is that, if you have a forced overnight at the airport, you be eligible for a complimentary overnight stay at the Grand Hyatt Incheon, just a 5 minute shuttle ride away, and this includes breakfast. You can even be on discount economy paid tickets, although I've heard that you do need to be connecting from one long haul international flight to another and that there are certain blackout periods, for example during certain holiday or peak summer dates. I haven't seen a report of anyone staying on an award ticket as I don't believe these are eligible (only paid Korean Air tickets), but if you've had a complimentary stay on a Korean Air award ticket, please share in the comments.

 

Note that you should call the Korean Airlines call center to check eligibility and reserve this ahead of time.
