Citi ThankYou: 20% Transfer Bonus to Cathay Asia Miles

Citi ThankYou: 20 Percent Transfer Bonus to Cathay Asia Miles

Citi ThankYou Points has a 20% transfer bonus to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, until September 6, 2017. There's currently a 50,000 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Visa bonus offer, so this could be a good combination for an Asia Miles redemption for Cathay Pacific First Class or Cathay Pacific Business Class. Here are the offer details:

FAQ

Are Transfers to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Instant?

Not usually; typical transfer time is 1 business day.

Can I Transfer Citi ThankYou Points to My Spouse's or Friend's Cathay Asia Miles Account?

No, the first and last name of the Citi ThankYou account and the Asia Miles account must match. But you can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to another Citi ThankYou member's account, and then he or she can transfer to his/her own Asia miles account. Keep in mind that ThankYou points transferred to another Citi ThankYou member's account expire 90 days after the transfer, so the transferee should be prompt in transferring ThankYou points out to Asia Miles or other frequent flyer program. When Do Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Expire?

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles expire 3 years after they are earned. They can be renewed for another 3 years for a service fee, but it's a good idea to continuously redeem miles and not hoard them, given periodic frequent flyer program devaluations.

What Do Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Award Charts Charge for Awards?

Cathay has two distance-based award charts. The Asia Miles Award Chart is for one or two carrier awards, and Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragonair must be included. Under this award chart:

  • Los Angeles LAX to Hong Kong HKG is ~7300 miles, so 180,000 Asia miles roundtrip (150,000 Citi ThankYou points given the 20% bonus)
  • New York JFK to Hong Kong HKG is ~8100 miles, so 220,000 Asia miles roundtrip (184,000 Citi ThankYou points given the 20% bonus)
By way of comparison, Alaska Mileage Plan charges 140,000 miles roundtrip between the U.S. and Asia, but Alaska miles don't have access to all the award availability Asia miles has, and only is bookable weeks after Asia Miles members have access.

American AAdvantage charges 220,000 miles roundtrip between the U.S. and Hong Kong (and other Asia 2 countries) and also only is bookable weeks after award availability opens to Asia Miles members.

Cathay also has a oneworld Award Chart, but this can only be used when you are either redeeming for an award that includes two oneworld alliance airlines where neither is Cathay Pacific / Dragonair; or your award includes three or more oneworld airlines, one of which is Cathay Pacific / Dragonair.

The oneworld award chart allows you make a maximum of 5 stopovers, two transfers and two open jaws, subject to airline partners' terms and conditions.

As an example this award chart would allow you to fly the following for 235,000 Asia Miles if you can find award space:
Of if you flew the above flights solely in Business Class, it would be 160,000 Asia Miles.

I personally won't be using this transfer bonus as I've closed all my Citi ThankYou accounts, as I don't value ThankYou points as highly as Chase Ultimate Rewards, AMEX Membership Rewards and SPG Starpoints. But if you have annual fees coming up and aren't convinced you want to keep your Citi ThankYou cards, this could be a good use for them before closing the cards.

Do you plan to use this 20% Citi ThankYou points transfer bonus to Asia Miles?
