This Review of Sea Glass Restaurant at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine is our first U.S. restaurant review since the coronavirus lockdowns, providing an example of how some restaurants are reopening.
Maine restaurants in Cumberland, York, and Androscoggin Counties opened for outdoor dining only on June 1, and indoor dining opened on June 17.
During our stay, all dining was outdoors, which was what we preferred anyway, both on account of COVID-19 and given the beautiful ocean views.
All diners sitting at tables needed to have made an advance reservation for a time between 5-7:30pm, although some additional Adirondack chairs were set up on the lawn for spontaneous diners who wished to enjoy a drink or light fare, such as a lobster roll.

Here's Sea Glass Restaurant's deck; in the evening, when we dined, the umbrellas were opened and the heat lamps were turned on to ward off the chill.
We arrived promptly at 6:30pm for our reservation, wearing our masks. The waiting area is inside, unfortunately, and we waited for a bit until the host came to seat us. Our host explained that we only needed to wear our masks when being seated and when getting up from our table to leave or to go inside to use the restrooms. While seated at our table, there was no need to wear a mask.

Sea Glass Menu and Food
The Sea Glass dinner menu during our visit consisted of a choice of four starters and eight main dishes. This is a copy of the menu that we were given during check-in; at the restaurant, the menu was laminated, to make it easy to disinfect between diners.

Our friendly server, as with our host, was wearing a mask. After taking our order, she brought us warm rolls, one whole wheat and the other with sesame and poppy seeds, along with some delicious blueberry butter.

I didn't order an appetizer, but my husband chose the New England Clam Chowder, which I sampled–one of the best clam chowders both of us has had in recent memory.

My husband ordered the lobster roll for his main. The lobster was fresh and sweet, but it was a relatively small serving, so best for smaller appetites.

Fortunately I'd ordered the roast half chicken with tamarind glaze, broccolini, and herb spaetzle. Thanks to the 36 hour brining, the chicken was moist and tender, and the tamarind glaze was addictive–so good I wished for a bit more of it on the side. The crispy, buttery herb spaetzle was a fantastic accompaniment, together with the roasted broccolini.

The Verdict
We really enjoyed our dinner at Sea Glass at the Inn by the Sea, thanks to the ocean view, friendly service, and excellent dishes, particularly the clam chowder and the roast chicken with tamarind glaze and herb spaetzle. Highly recommended both for guests of Inn by the Sea and those staying near the Cape Elizabeth area in Maine. Just don't forget to make an advance reservation.
