A 55K Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus Offer is available and on the Best Travel Credit Cards page, with a 50K signup bonus and 5000 additional bonus Ultimate Rewards points for adding an authorized user. This is higher than the previous 45K offer (40K card bonus with 5000 points for adding an authorized user), making it one of the few pieces of good news in what has been a terrible travel news week.
Here are the offer details:
- Earn 50,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4000 within the first 3 months after account opening.
- Earn an additional 5000 bonus points (total of 55,000 points) after you add an authorized user and make a purchase within the first 3 months after account opening.
- Earn 2X points on all travel
- Earn 2X points on all dining
- No foreign tranaction fee
- Annual fee waived the first year; thereafter $95 per year
FAQ
I Previously Had a Chase Sapphire Preferred; Am I Eligible to Earn the Bonus Again?
You're eligible for the bonus if you are not a current cardmember, and have not received a bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred within the past 24 months.
I Just Applied for the Card Under the 40K Bonus! Can I Get this Higher Bonus?
If you applied and were approved with the last 2-3 months, you have a good chance of being approved for the higher bonus. Send Chase a secure message along the lines of “I recently was approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred under the 40,000 bonus points offer, and noticed that there is now a 50,000 bonus offer; could you please match me to this improved offer?”
When Will the Bonus Points Post?
Chase's terms state to allow 6-8 weeks for the bonus Ultimate Rewards points to post, after meeting the minimum spend.
Which Frequent Flyer Programs and Hotel Programs Can I Transfer Ultimate Rewards Points to?
You can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to these frequent flyer and hotel programs; I've bolded the ones I consider the best value:
- British Airways Executive Club (Avios)
- Korean Air SKYPASS
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
- Southwest
- United MileagePlus
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
- Hyatt Gold Passport
- IHG Rewards Club
- Marriott Rewards
- Ritz-Carlton Rewards
Can I Combine Chase Freedom Points with Ultimate Rewards Points?
Yes, if you have the Chase Freedom and the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can combine Freedom points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred Ultimate Rewards points, and transfer them out to a frequent flyer program in your name or a designated family member's name (see Chase Ultimate Rewards Points Transfer Changes)
Should I Use the Chase Sapphire Preferred for All Travel, Since It Earns 2X?
It depends on which other credit cards you have, and which miles and points you value. If you value AMEX Membership Rewards points and have the AMEX Premier Rewards Gold or AMEX Business Gold card with airfare as your 3X category, you may want to use that card for airfare you buy directly with airlines, since it earns 3X.
If you're trying to earn more Singapore KrisFlyer miles and have the Citi ThankYou Premier card, you may want to use that card for most of your travel after earning the signup bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred, since the Citi ThankYou Premier earns 3X on all travel and ThankYou points can also be transferred 1:1 to Singapore KrisFlyer.
That said, I do recommend earning Ultimate Rewards points with this card, as well as AMEX Membership Rewards points, as part of a strategy for diversifying your miles and points, especially given the regular award chart devaluations we've seen, with the American AAdvantage 2016 Award Chart Devaluation the latest casualty.
