50K Points for AMEX Business Rewards Gold and Aeroplan Transfer Bonuses-Worth It?

AMEX Business Gold Rewards 50,000 Points for $5000 Spend

Deal Updates: American Express is offering 50,000 Membership Rewards points for the Business Gold Rewards Card after spending $5000 in 3 months.

Separately, Aeroplan is offering bonuses ranging from 1000 bonus Aeroplan miles when you transfer hotel points into 5000 Aeroplan miles, to 40,000 Aeroplan miles when you transfer hotel points into 150,000 Aeroplan miles.

I'll cut right to the chase: I think the AMEX Business Gold Rewards offer IS worth it to many folks, with the lower minimum spend, but the Aeroplan offer is NOT worth it for most people, although it may be worth it for very specific redemptions.

AMEX 50,000 Membership Rewards Points for the Business Gold Rewards Card: Worth It for Many

In the past, the limited time offers for the AMEX Business Gold Rewards Card have been 75,000 points for $10,000 in spend, so this new offer, even though it's for fewer points, is better if you'd have trouble meeting $10,000 minimum spend, but can meet $5000 minimum spend.

Here are the key offer terms:

  • 50,000 Membership Rewards bonus points for spending $5000 in 3 months
  • Offer Bonus ID A3WP
  • No set application deadline, so apply soon if you want this offer
  • “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product or any other Business Gold, Green or Platinum Card account within the last 12 months”
  • No annual fee the first year, then $175

Note in particular the eligibility: you're still eligible if you've have or had a personal AMEX card within the past 12 months; but not if you've had an AMEX business Gold, Green or Platinum card.

AMEX Membership Rewards points are great if you're looking to transfer points and book Singapore First Class or Singapore Suites, or to transfer to several other Membership Rewards airline transfer partners. See Top 10 Best Ways to Use AMEX Membership Rewards Points

Aeroplan Transfer Bonuses from Hotels: Not Worth It for Most

Here are the key terms of the Aeroplan transfer bonus offer:
  • Transfer points from hotel, Canadian credit card or Points.com transfer partners (although the only one that really makes sense is SPG)
  • Transfer as many times as you like until May 13; total Aeroplan miles resulting from the transfers will be used to calculate the Aeroplan bonus miles you receive
  • AMEX Membership Rewards points do NOT qualify for the transfer bonus
Since most of the other hotel and travel partners have pretty horrible transfer ratios, apart from SPG, it only makes sense if you have some orphaned hotel points somewhere and are planning to book an Aeroplan award. That said, a few of the better transfer ratios are:
  • Shangri-La Golden Circle points transfer 1:1, but you must transfer a minimum of 2500 points
  • Coast Rewards points transfer 1:1
  • 600 Hertz points = 500 Aeroplan miles
  • Wyndham Rewards points transfer 2.5:1
For most folks considering doing this in volume, it will be SPG points due to the bonus on top of the usual 25% bonus for transfers in increments of 20,000 points. So here's what you'd get for transferring various amounts of SPG points:
  • 20K SPG points = 29K Aeroplan miles (25,000 miles + 4000 bonus Aeroplan miles from the promotion)
  • 40K SPG points = 60K Aeroplan miles (50,000 miles + 10,000 bonus Aeroplan miles from the promotion)
  • 80K SPG points = 125K Aeroplan miles (100,000 miles + 25,000 bonus Aeroplan miles from the promotion)
  • 120K SPG points = 190K Aeroplan miles (150,000 miles + 40,000 bonus Aeroplan miles from the promotion)
While in theory 90,000 Aeroplan miles gets you a nice business class roundtrip to Europe with two additional stopovers allowed, in practice, I can't get excited about this award ever since the Aeroplan devaluation of adding fuel surcharges to Star Alliance partners, including Lufthansa, plus the fact that there's basically no Swiss business class awards released in advance–you'd have to be *very* lucky to get a Swiss premium class award. You also won't get Singapore business class award space, so of the airlines that Aeroplan doesn't yet apply fuel surcharges to that leaves:
  • Aegean
  • Air New Zealand
  • Avianca/TACA
  • Brussels
  • Copa
  • Croatia
  • EgyptAir
  • Ethiopian
  • SAS
  • South African
  • TAM
  • Turkish
  • United
  • US Airways
So I can't say I'd get too excited about a Europe award given the realities of fuel surcharges and limited, last minute award availability for Swiss.

But if you have a need, say, for a roundtrip from Japan to New Zealand, an Air New Zealand business class award for 90,000 miles could be a good bet, especially if you already have 30K Aeroplan miles and just need to transfer an additional 40K SPG points as that gets you 60K Aeroplan miles with the standing 25% transfer bonus plus the Aeroplan transfer bonus promo.

Will you be taking advantage of either the AMEX Business Rewards Gold or Aeroplan Transfer Bonus Promotions?
