FAQ

I Had The AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Card But Closed It. Am I Eligible?

Per the terms, no–“offer is not available to applicants who have or have had this product.” In general, personal AMEX card signup bonuses are only once in a lifetime now.

I Have Other AMEX Cards But Have Never Had This Card–Am I Eligible?

Per the terms, you may not be eligible for the bonus, so you could potentially apply, incur a hard credit pull, be approved and meet spend, but not be awarded the bonus, with no recourse. AMEX could simply point to the terms and state that it says “If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

If you do decide to take your chances and are approved, I recommend that when you activate your card, you confirm the bonus with the rep and take down the rep's name, before spending on the card.

Are There Any Better AMEX Signup Bonus Offers?

The best American Express credit card signup offers are targeted ones, typically received via snail mail, with unique offer codes that can only be used by the person it's addressed to. So even if your college age kid gets a fantastic offer for the AMEX Platinum, you can't take advantage of it (but if your kid is very responsible with their finances, you may want to encourage him or her to take advantage of it!)

If you have a business or have other business cards, you may be sent something great, such as this targeted 150K AMEX Business Platinum bonus offer one TravelSort received.

There was a 75,000 AMEX Business Gold Offer for $10,000 spend, but that appears to be dead–though if anyone has had recent success in getting approved for it, please post in the comments.

Is There a Way to Expedite Posting of the Bonus Membership Rewards Points?

Sometimes, if you get a kind customer service agent on the phone, although more recently a common message is that it will take between 6-8 weeks, as stated in the terms. Also note that it's no longer possible to do a points advance, as this option was eliminated.

I Already Have Tons of AMEX Membership Rewards Points–What Do I Do With Them?

The highest value use of AMEX Membership Rewards points is transferring them to frequent flyer programs to book international first class and business class awards, such as Singapore Suites on the A380, Singapore Business Class, Qantas First Class on the A380 and Cathay Pacific First Class via British Airways Avios (although note the recently announced New British Airways Avios Devaluation).
