AMEX Offers: Staples, Virgin America and Sony

AMEX Offers: Virgin America, Staples and Sony

Current AMEX offers include $25 Off $100 at Staples.com plus offers from Virgin America and Sony. These are targeted, so you may not see all of these offers on a given card. Also note that enrollment is limited, so if you see an offer you'd like, save it to all of your targeted cards sooner rather than later.

If you do see that more than one of your AMEX cards has the offer and you want to use the offer more than once, you'll want to open up the offers page for each of your AMEX cards in a separate tab in the same browser (I recommend Google Chrome) and then quickly save the offer to each targeted card. Otherwise, if you only have one offer page open and save the offer, it will automatically disappear from all of your other AMEX cards that were targeted.

Here are the details:

1. Staples.com: $25 Back After Spending $100

  • Staples.com only; not valid in-store or over the phone
  • Must purchase by 2/7/15
  • Not valid on physical and electronic gift card purchases (but see below)
  • Not valid on Quill, Smilemaker, Staples Business Advantage, Staples Toner Services, Staples Technology Solutions, Staples Promotional Products, Staples Print Solutions, Staples Contract and Commercial, Staples Simplexity and international purchases
  • If you order an item during the offer period but it is not sent to you until after 2/7/15 it may not qualify for the offer
  • Limit 1 statement credit per American Express online account

AMEX Staples Offer

While the terms explicitly state that gift cards do *not* qualify for the offer, apparently many have reported success at receiving the statement credit for them–your mileage may vary.

If you have your own business or otherwise go through a fair amount of printer paper, it's worth noting that per Dan Staples.com currently (until 1/10) is offering Staples Multipurpose Printer Paper at $53.99 with a $44 rebate per case, so if you have one $25 off $100 AMEX Staples.com offer, you can buy a couple cases for $107.98 + tax (for NY, tax is $9.58) – $88 in rebates – $25 AMEX statement credit, for a net cost of $4.56 in my case (could vary depending on your state tax).

AMEX Offers: $25 Off $100 at Staples plus Copy Paper Easy Rebate

To obtain your Staples easy rebate, just go to the online Staples Rebate Center, click the right hand Staples.com link, enter your 10 digit order number and zip code, and fill in the other details. You'll receive Visa prepaid gift cards that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. Although Staples says to allow 4-6 weeks to receive your rebate gift cards, it usually is faster than that.

You could even try earning some additional miles and points by first clicking through a miles or points shopping portal, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards. You won't, of course, earn anything for gift cards (Chase seems to be better at enforcing its terms excluding gift card purchases from bonus points) but this may work for otherwise qualifying purchases, such as the paper deal above. Make sure to clear your cookies before going through a mileage shopping portal, since otherwise your purchase may not track correctly and not receive bonus miles or points.

2. Virgin America: $50 Back After Spending $250 or More

  • Receive a one-time $50 statement credit after spending $250 with your enrolled AMEX card with Virgin America
  • Must purchase by 1/15/15
  • Only Virgin America flight tickets qualify as purchases
  • Purchase may be at virginamerica.com, through the reservation call center or at Virgin America airport locations; no third party channels qualify
  • Not valid on purchases made through Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Australia
While I personally don't tend to fly Virgin America, I had a decent experience in Virgin America First Class, and I know many folks prefer them to the legacy carriers.

3. Sony: $25 Back After Spending $100

If you're buying Sony electronics, don't forget to first click through your favorite online shopping portal to pick up a few more bonus points for your Sony spend, although you'll need to use your enrolled AMEX card to pay to earn the $25 statement credit. Note that you may be offered a better deal by chatting with a Sony rep through the chat function–see New Travel Camera: Maximize Points or Improved Warranty Coverage?
  • Get a one-time $25 statement credit by using your enrolled AMEX card to spend a total of $100 or more in-store at Sony or online at store.sony.com by 2/3/15
  • Excludes Sony Entertainment, Sony Pictures and B2B purchases
  • Not valid outside the U.S.
  • Limit 1 statement credit per AMEX card across all offer channels
