Where to Stay in London for the Olympics

Where to Stay in London for the Olympics

If you're planning to be in London for the Olympics (or anything else late July through mid-August 2012) you may be wondering where to stay. Be sure to book your hotel or other accommodation soon–many hotels are already fully booked, even at sky high rates. Here are a few hotels that we still have available for some, if not all days for the Olympics. If you see one you like for a date that works, book it!

Sofitel St. James Hotel

Why we like it:

  • Super central London location, just 3 minutes walk from Paddington Station. Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and Oxford Street are all nearby
  • Nice views of London and St. James Park from some of the upper floor rooms
  • The Rose Lounge is perfect for an elegant British afternoon tea
  • So SPA is one of London's best spas–enjoy the traditional Turkish hammam or a soothing Balinese massage

What to know: Unfortunately the hotel is already fully booked for most August dates. Also, the free WiFi is very slow; you'll need to pay to upgrade to faster WiFi

Available: a few dates in late July

Indigo London Paddington

Why we like it:

  • Super central London location, just 3 minutes walk from Paddington Station. Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and Oxford Street are all nearby
  • Funky, modern design
  • Helpful, friendly staff
  • Free WiFi

What to know: prices are of course, as with other central London hotels, much higher during the Olympics. If it's possible to use Priority Club points during this time for an award stay, definitely redeem them.

Available: most dates in late July and early-mid August

Sofitel London Gatwick

Why we like it:

  • Sofitel's ultra-comfortable beds
  • Quiet, very well soundproofed
  • The light-filled central atrium
  • Conveniently connected to the airport–no shuttle needed to get there

What to know: There's no fitness center, pool or spa at this Sofitel. The best way to get from Gatwick Airport to central London is via the Gatwick Express, which runs every 15 minutes and takes 30 minutes. An off-peak day return (roundtrip) ticket is £20.00 if bought online.

Available: most dates in late July and early-mid August

The Felbridge Hotel and Spa

Why we like it:

  • One of the best value options for the Olympics, with rates around $200/night including tax for a 3.5 star hotel
  • Free WiFi
  • Great spa: indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, massages
  • Surprisingly well-executed dishes in both the hotel restaurants, The Bay Tree Restaurant and Anise

What to know: Standard Doubles are tiny; book a Superior Double Room unless you're traveling alone or don't mind being very cozy with your traveling companion. Getting to The Felbridge from London without a car will take about 1 hour: either a 50 minute train ride to East Grinstead station then 5 minute taxi ride, or 30 minute ride on the Gatwick Express from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport then a 15 minute taxi ride (or bus route 400).

Available: most dates in late July and early-mid August
