Declined for the Citi Prestige card? You may actually have been approved, and the declined message may be a system glitch. At least, that's what happened with both my husband and me. Since neither of us was targeted for the 100K Citi Prestige Card we each applied for the regular 50K Citi Prestige offer, to avoid the high minimum spend of the 60K offer. Even though we've never been declined before for a Citi credit card, we got the following message after submitting our online application, indicating that we'd been declined:
“Thank you for applying for the Citi Prestige® Card.
After careful consideration, we are unable to approve your application. You will receive written notification with the reasons for the decision. If you have further questions once you receive the letter, please call us at the number listed.
Thank you for considering Citi.”
Since we were busy with work and about to travel, we didn't bother with any type of reconsideration request, either by phone or snail mail. For us, this card is all about the 50K ThankYou points bonus, which we plan to transfer to Singapore KrisFlyer for future Singapore Suites flights, and the $250 per calendar year airfare credit, which more than pays for the card's $450 annual fee in the first year of membership.
Lo and behold, about 5 days after we applied, we both got approved for the card, without either of us contacting Citi. It seems others on Flyertalk are reporting similar experiences; see for example Daveyb101, who was initially auto-denied but called to find he'd actually been approved, with a $50,000 credit limit.
So if you were instantly denied for a Citi Prestige application yet aren't usually denied for credit card applications, don't immediately call reconsideration–you may well be approved in a few days without any effort on your part.
