5X on Groceries with AmazonFresh and $25 Off First Order

Amazon Fresh can be a new 5X opportunity for grocery shopping, to increase the Ultimate Rewards points you earn from natural spend. 5X on Amazon spend is a significant part of how we earn Ultimate Rewards points via spend (as opposed to credit card bonuses), along with 5X on Whole Foods spend, both made possible with our Ink Plus and gift cards purchased at Staples. But even though our local Whole Foods is a fairly short walk away, it can be something of a chore during busy times there to navigate through a crowded store and wait in line. Of course, lines are relative; I also still do periodic shopping at Trader Joe's for items we love and can't get elsewhere, and those lines wrap around the entire store.

But back to AmazonFresh. In general I've not been a fan of grocery delivery services; the main competitor in our area is Fresh Direct, and I only tried it when there was a serious cash incentive to do so. Amazon Fresh may be similar, since I see criticisms online ranging from the poor quality of fresh produce to the excessive packaging to delays in deliveries.

Still, I'm more willing to give it a try since, unlike Fresh Direct, it provides another way to earn 5X in addition to all the other things we buy on Amazon via Amazon Prime. Here's the offer:

  • Try Amazon Fresh free during a 30 day trial
  • Use promo code FRESH25 for $25 off your first $75 or more order from Amazon Fresh; offer must be redeemed within the first 7 days of signing up for the free trial
  • Offer does not apply to digital content
  • Offer limited to one customer and account
  • Offer not valid for existing AmazonFresh customers
  • Offer expires at 11:59 PT December 31, 2016 or when all promotional codes are claimed, whichever is earlier
  • Amazon reserves the right to modify or cancel the offer at any time

Previously, I remember reading that AmazonFresh's subscription was increasing to $299 per year, which is steep indeed. Fortunately, the price to continue the service beyond the free trial period is now $14.99 per month, and includes free delivery for orders over $40.

I searched for some of our staples, such as Noosa yogurt, Wallaby yogurt and Haagen Dazs vanilla bean ice cream, and was happy to see all of these, as well as things I buy more occasionally, such as King Salmon. Even better, the Noosa yogurt was the same price as the sale price in my local Whole Foods, and the Haagen Dazs ice cream was half the price I normally pay.

How AmazonFresh Works

Select a Delivery Day and Time

After you sign up for a free trial, you're able to select a delivery day and time for your order. You can choose either an unattended delivery (with insulated totes) or an attended delivery, if you'll be home during the delivery window.

Select Your Items

You have 60 minutes after selecting your delivery window to add items to your cart, with your delivery window held. If you're ordering a few days ahead, as I was, there probably isn't too much danger of your delivery window becoming unavailable, so even if you get sidetracked and have to return to your grocery shopping later, you should be able to reselect your delivery window.

Make Sure You Have $40 or More to Enjoy Free Delivery ($75 or More the First Order to Use the Promo Code)

The PrimeFresh free delivery minimum is $40, otherwise delivery costs $9.99. Note that to use the $25 off your first order offer, you must have $75 in your cart.

Bottom Line

Is Amazon Fresh going to replace all my shopping at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's? No–there are too many things that we regularly buy that are not carried by Amazon Fresh. But is the free trial worth it? Absolutely. And it's possible, given the lower prices of certain items, that we may continue to subscribe to it even after the trial, given the current $14.99 per month price.
