United's new 787-9 Dreamliner LA to Melbourne flight starting October 26 is offering some BusinessFirst award space, but get it quickly as it's going fast.
The award costs:
- 70,000 United MileagePlus miles each way, 140,000 miles roundtrip
- 110,000 US Airways Dividend miles roundtrip (one ways cost the same as a roundtrip, with Dividend Miles)
- 80,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles each way, 160,000 miles roundtrip
The best deal in terms of frequent flyer miles and points is US Airways for the roundtrip, 110,000 miles, but good luck booking it–a number of folks have called and been told that US Airways doesn't have access to the space, so it could be an exercise in frustration.
The United BusinessFirst seats recline into a fully flat bed 6 feet 5 inches in length, with a 19.2 inch screen and USB power. They're in a 2 – 2 configuration, which is nicest for couples; if flying solo you'll need to decide if you prefer the greater privacy of a window seat vs. having to step over your neighbor if s/he is sleeping.
To double check the award space is there, you may want to use the ANA Tool. Right now, there's some decent availability in early to mid December for the outbound, returning around Christmas. Keep in mind the below is award space for two passengers, so award availability is better if you're flying solo.
United's BusinessFirst seats on the 787-9 are fully flat, so this is a great nonstop option for the 15 hour, 45 minute flight between the U.S. and Australia if you have the miles and can book now. The paid roundtrip would run you over $7200, so you're looking at over 5 cents per mile in value booking with United miles.
