Review: Moevenpick Stuttgart Airport Hotel

The Moevenpick Stuttgart Airport Hotel is often the first or last stop for my clients doing the Mercedes-Benz European Delivery Program, where they enjoy a tour of the Mercedes-Benz Factory in Sindelfingen, take delivery of their new Mercedes with a full tank of gas, then spend 1-2 weeks touring Germany, Austria and/or Switzerland before having their new car shipped across the Atlantic. Moevenpick as a brand is mostly known to me as a food company, since its ice creams feature in SWISS airport lounges such as the SWISS Arrivals Lounge in Zurich. I've also enjoyed creamy Moevenpick yogurt in Singapore Suites from Frankfurt to Singapore, and have had Moevenpick jams.

Since I had a morning flight out of Stuttgart, the Moevenpick was my final stop, and I wasn't expecting much as an airport hotel. Fortunately I was pleasantly surpised.

Moevenpick Stuttgart Airport Location and Check-In

The Moevenpick Stuttgart Airport is located right next to the airport, literally a 165 feet (50 meters) from the airport entrance. Our little group arrived late in the evening, when there were a couple front desk agents on staff, so there was a slight wait. Hopefully when large groups come to stay there are more agents on duty, as otherwise the wait could be significant.

Superior Room

Superior Rooms are about 300 square feet, so not huge, but fine for 1-2 people. My room came with a Queen bed, but 2 Twin beds are also possible, as are smoking rooms.

There's a work desk and chair, although the TV seemed somewhat inconveniently placed off to the right, not that it mattered in my case as I never watch it.

I was happy to find an electrical outlet underneath the nightstand. A surprising number of airport and business-oriented hotels don't have easy access to a plug right by the bed. Now, given that this is an airport hotel, it would be nice to see various region outlets, such as North America, so as not to have to locate your adapter. But then again, this is a 4 star hotel, not a luxury hotel.

The small table featured a welcome note hand signed by the GM, a nice touch given the size of this hotel, and a welcome snack of an apple and KitKat.

The bathroom featured one sink and a tile shower with bath gel in a pump dispenser. A good eco measure, although I opted to use the L'Occitane bath products I always travel with.

There was a rubber duck adding a whimsical touch, although purely decorative since there was no bathtub. I saved it instead as a bath toy for the munchkin. Note that if you're a family traveling with young children, you'll want to book a Junior Suite, since it comes with a bath tub; all regular rooms are only equipped with showers. Similarly, if you need a King Bed, only the Junior Suite offers one; all lower category rooms only offer Queen beds.

The hot water kettle came in handy, since I had to do some work and a cup of hot tea hit the spot to sip as I worked.

Breakfast Buffet at Trollinger Restaurant

The breakfast buffet at Trollinger Restaurant is very good for a 4-star airport hotel. Your main issue may be finding a place to sit, since as large as it is, it does fill up.

Juices were fresh squeezed, and good. It was impossible to find non-sparkling water (this was a recurring issue for me throughout Germany) so you'll need to just ask for tap water, which is perfectly safe and drinkable.

Although I didn't have time for an omelet, you could have an omelet or other eggs made to order:

By the time I was there some of the fruit was getting slightly depleted, but no doubt it would be replaced soon, as there were ample staff.

There were also a number of breakfast meats, and also some excellent smoked salmon:

While there was a cheese plate with goat cheese, blue cheese and gruyere, what I really enjoyed was being able to shave some Tete de Moine for myself. It stands to reason that as one of Switzerland's most famous cheeses, there would be some.

As you'd expect for a Swiss hotel in Germany, there were all kinds of fresh baked breads and rolls.

For me, these were simply a vehicle for the honeycomb:

And also for the extensive selection of Moevenpick jams, of which I was most intrigued by a Raspberry Passionfruit jam:

The Maitre D' noticed me taking a photo, and I mentioned how much the flavor appealed to me. Soon after, while I was finishing my breakfast, he came over with a nicely wrapped jar of the jam–I was floored. Sure, it's something that often happens at an Aman Resort, but I never expected such a kind gesture here–truly above and beyond.

The Verdict

Normally I avoid airport hotels if at all possible. All too often they're overpriced, understaffed (and/or with a surly staff), and of questionable cleanliness. The Moevenpick Stuttgart was one of the nicer airport hotels I've stayed at, with clean and modern rooms supported by a very professional and friendly staff. The breakfast buffet was very good for this class of hotel, particularly in the assortment of fresh baked breads and jams. I still can't believe the Maitre D' gave me a nicely wrapped jam, when he saw me taking a photo of it. It was, by the way, scrumptious and enjoyed by my whole family–and worth breaking my rule of never checking a bag, to bring it home.
