June 2024 Update: It's again possible to renew a U.S. passport online if you're one of the first applicants at noon ET. As noted below, you'll first need to have a MyTravelGov account. After creating that account, you'll receive an email with a link to click to verify the new account. It may take between several hours to a day for your account to be registered with the State Department, after which you'll be able to log in to your new MyTravelGov account to begin your passport renewal. Note the requirements below; you won't be able to renew a passport online unless your current or previous passport was valid for 10 years, and you're age 25 or older.
Renew a U.S. Passport Online, as part of a beta initiative resulting from an executive order (see Online Passport Renewal: New White House Executive Order).Typically, renewing a U.S. passport takes about one month but can take up to 11 weeks if you choose regular rather than expedited service. That's not terribly convenient, since you can't travel internationally during that time. An alternative is Expedited Service (which costs $60 extra, on top of the $130 passport renewal fee), where processing time is 5-7 weeks instead of the 8-11 weeks of Regular Service; paying for 1-2 day return delivery adds an additional $19.53.
Note that expedited processing is NOT available with online passport renewal; the expected processing time of 6-8 weeks is the same as with mail renewal, but saves a trip to the post office.
Here are the details:
Request Online U.S. Passport Renewal

- You are not traveling internationally for at least 8 weeks from the date you will submit your application, since only routine processing is available with online renewal.
- You must be age 25 or older, with a current or recent passport with a 10 year validity
- You must be in physical possession of your existing passport, and it cannot be damaged or mutilated
- All of your personal details (name, gender, date of birth, place of birth) must remain the same as in your existing passport

Thanks for this post; the process was easy and undoubtedly will result in a much faster turnaround. I chose a larger book, expedited & priority usps service. Appreciate your blog.
