Getting to Park Avenue Winter

Park Avenue Winter is located at 360 Park Avenue South at 26th Street, a couple blocks down from the 28th Street stop on the 6 train, or a few blocks over from the R and N train 28th Street stop.

The Scene

Park Avenue Winter was buzzing with activity due to Restaurant Week, with a mixture of couples, friends and business people lunching. It was definitely less of a “ladies who lunch” feel than at the old uptown location.

Park Avenue Winter Restaurant Week Menu and Food

While I mostly forego NYC Restaurant Week these days, Park Avenue Winter tends to put together a better Restaurant Week menu than many other participating restaurants. I liked that Appetizer choices included both a crabcake and a scallop option, and that the mains included both meat and fish options.

We started well, with hot bread served in a cute cast iron pan, and butter. Park Avenue Winter has always been great with its bread offering, something that many restaurants pay scant attention to, if they serve complimentary bread at all.

Our appetizers took awhile, no doubt due to how busy the restaurant was when we dined, but were worth waiting for. My husband's Scallop sandwich had a nice kick from some spicy mayo and jalapenos:

My Peekytoe Crabcake was delicious and creatively paired with Citrus and Hearts of Palm. There was a $5 supplement for this, which I thought was worth it given the generous amount of crab.

My husband's Braised Shortrib Sandwich was fantastic comfort food: tender beef with horseradish creme fraiche and blue cheese atop a toasted roll.

My Pork Schnitzel was a bit plainer, but executed very well and perfectly cooked–a good choice for anyone not wanting anything too strongly flavored.

In comparison, our desserts were a bit of a let down. My husband's Winter Sundae in particular could have come from anywhere.

My Sticky Toffee Pudding wasn't bad, but it lacked the sticky, gooey deliciousness the best British version have, even though the caramelized bananas were a nice accent.

The Verdict

We hadn't been to Park Avenue Winter in years, but I'm happy to report that even during Restaurant Week lunch it acquits itself well. This in spite of the fact that Restaurant Week often means a compartively lackluster meal as restaurants struggle with high volume and a prix fixe that doesn't leave much room for profit. Service was pleasant and solid, given how busy the restaurant was. The only real negative was the lackluster dessert, but that's easily overlooked when the rest of the meal was so good.
