NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2017: Where to Go and AMEX Statement Credit

NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2017: Where to Go and AMEX Statement Credit

NYC Restaurant Week for Summer 2017 is July 24 – August 18, so you actually have 3 weeks. A 3-course lunch is $29, and 3-course dinner is $42. You can also register your AMEX card to receive $5 back with at least $35 in a single transaction, up to 4 times (so a maximum of $20) during NYC Restaurant Week.

AMEX NYC Restaurant Week Statement Credit:

  • Register your AMEX card by 12am August 18, 2017
  • Corporate and prepaid AMEX cards not eligible
  • Use the registered card for a dining purchase of $35 or more at any of the participating NYC Restaurant Week restaurants July 24-August 18, 2017 and receive $5 statement credit back, per each transaction of $35 or more
  • Limit of up to 4 statement credit (total of $20) per enrolled card
  • Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after the offer end date

How to Maximize the AMEX Statement Credit

If you and your dining partner both have AMEX cards that you've enrolled in the Restaurant Week offer, you can split the check so that you each earn $5 statement credit for your meal. With tax and tip, it's easy to meet the $35 minimum even for lunch. Or, if only one of you has an enrolled AMEX card, you can still split it to earn $5 statement credit for one of you, and at least 3X points on the other card.

Earning 3X-5X per Dollar Without AMEX

If one or both of you doesn't have an AMEX card that you've enrolled in the $5 off offer, don't forget to pay for your meal with a Chase Freedom card that you've activated the Q3 2017 5X bonus for restaurants, so you can earn 5X per dollar. If you don't have a Chase Freedom 5X card, you can use a Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3X per dollar on restaurant spend.

1. Cafe Boulud, Upper East Side (Weekday Lunch)

Appetizer: Cod Brandade or Tomato Gazpacho

Main Course: Roasted Pork Loin with Jalapeno-Cheddar Cornbread or Pan Seared Porgy with Summer Squash and Zucchini Pesto

Dessert: Blueberry Clafoutis or Chocolate Pot du Creme

Cafe Boulud, NYC

2. Neta (Weekday Lunch)

Neta, in NYC's West Village, is a Japanese restaurant led by Chef Sungchul Shim, who has worked most recently at Per Se, but also at Bouley, Aureole, Le Bernardin, and also Japanese restaurant Momoya. One of my clients has recommended it to me, and since I'm always looking for great sushi places that won't break the bank (at least for lunch) I'm keen to try it for Restaurant Week.

Appetizer: Neta Sushi (5 pieces of nigiri sushi) or Neta Hand Roll (3 pieces: Salmon, Spicy Tuna and Hamachi)

Main Course: Sake Ikura Donburi (Salmon Sashimi and Ikura) or Bigeye Akami Poke Bowl (Wasabi-soy Marinated Tuna) or Bulgogi Steak Donburi

Dessert: Dorrayaki with ice cream or Frozen Iced Coffee with ice cream

Neta Restaurant, NYC

3. Park Avenue Summer (Weekday Lunch)

Appetizer: Soft Shell Crab, Sesame Aioli & Tropical Fruit or Sweet Corn Gnocchi with Black Summer Truffles

Main Course: Heritage Pork Loin with Cornbread Grits & Peach Mustard or Scottish Salmon, Cucumber, Avocado & Dill

Dessert: Lemon Creme Brulee, Blueberry Compote, Lemon Curd or Black Forest Cake with Brandied Cherries and Pistachio Cream

Park Avenue Summer

4. Riverpark

Riverpark, located at 29th Street, is right on the East River. It may not be the most convenient place to get to, but the upside is that it offers a greater variety of choices for each course than most other NYC restaurants participating in NYC Restaurant Week. The ones below are the ones I'd recommend.

Appetizer: Octopus Carpaccio or Spanish Gazpacho or East & West Coast Oysters on the half shell ($5 supplement)

Main Course: Roasted Salmon with Crispy Fingerling Potatoes or Roasted Branzino with Tomato Panzanella or House-Made Pork Sausage with Grilled Peaches and Collard Greens or Cavatelli with Smoked Lamb, Corn and Shishito Peppers or Grilled Sweet Tea-Brined Chicken Leg with Black Eyed Peas, Corn, Heirloom Peppers and Zucchini

Dessert: Key Lime Tart with Mango Sauce and Coconut Sherbet or Japanese Cheesecake with Lemon-Basil Shortbread and Blueberry Compote

Riverpark, NYC

5. ilili Restaurant (Weekday Lunch)

In general I don't care for restaurants that charge supplements for so many of their main course choices, but I have heard great things about ilili from clients and even friends who are Lebanese, so I'm including it in my recommendations.

Appetizer: Moussaka or Mouhamara or Labne or Fattoush or Hommus or Stuffed Grape Leaves

Main Course: Falafel Wrap or Cubano Beiruteh or Lamb Burger (Supplement $5) or 12 oz. Boneless Ribeye (Supplement $13)

Dessert: Ilili Candy Bar (Dark Chocolate Ganache, Fig Caramel, Salted Pistachio) or Strawberry Rhubarb Shortcake

ilili Restaurant, NYC (Lebanese Cuisine)
