New York City‘s Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza Will Open May 10, 2021 as a park-like green expanse for New Yorkers and visitors to relax in and enjoy.
“THE GREEN,” made of grass-like recyclable, biobased SYNLawn material, will be the physical heart of Restart Stages, Lincoln Center’s initiative to kickstart the arts sector and New York City’s revival. The reimagined public space is designed by MacArthur Genius grantee and set designer Mimi Lien.
Said Lien: “When invited to consider how the physical space of Josie Robertson Plaza could be re-envisioned to be a more inclusive and inviting environment, I immediately thought that by changing the ground surface from hard paving stones with no seating to a material like grass, suddenly anyone would be able to sit anywhere.”
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will lend out books in an outdoor reading room, visitors can enjoy refreshments from a small snack bar, and pop-up music and dance performances and workshops will be offered throughout the summer and fall, from concert and cabaret series by Lincoln Center Theater, film screenings from Film at Lincoln Center, summer concerts from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and dance workshops from New York City Ballet, to performances by the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, Harlem Week and the Harlem Arts Alliance, and Korean Cultural Center New York. Events will be free or low-cost.
