Meyers Bageri Frederiksberg Copenhagen Review

.

This Meyers Bageri Frederiksberg Copenhagen Review is from our most recent visit to Copenhagen. Meyers Bageri is the bakery arm of New Nordic Cuisine pioneer Claus Meyer, who co-founded Michelin 3-star Noma with René Redzepi and has several other restaurants and a catering business in Copenhagen.

Meyers Bageri Frederiksberg Copenhagen Location and Hours

Meyers Bageri is located on Frederiksberg main shopping street, at Gammel Kongevej 107, about a 20 minute walk or 4 minute drive from Copenhagen Station and Tivoli. It's open daily from 7am-6pm, although keep in mind that the kitchen is open 9am-3pm. No reservations are taken, all seating is first come, first served. The small outdoor area is popular during warmer months, but there's usually space available indoors if all outdoor seats are taken.

Meyers Bageri Frederiksberg Menu and Food

The bakery sells a variety of organic rye and whole grain breads, as well as pastries such as Tebirkes, made with croissant dough and a scant filling of marzipan, then coated with poppy seeds. While delicious, I'm afraid it doesn't compare with the best French pastries, so unless one's a huge fan of poppyseeds I recommend sticking with the organic breads.

The breakfast menu includes Scandinavian favorites such as overnight oats, yogurt with fruit and granola, and a breakfast plate with sourdough and rye breads, Gammel Knas cheese (a kind of Havarti), butter, jam, and soft-boiled egg. While most native English and German speakers will be able to decipher quite a bit of the menu, the staff, like most Copenhagen residents over the age of 8, speaks English.

Since we were there for lunch, we chose heartier fare. The chicken salad was a generous portion, with plenty of salad greens and walnuts, and even a pretty shower of edible flowers.

My smoked salmon smørrebrød was a smaller portion, good for a light lunch or snack, with excellent cold-smoked salmon, creme fraiche, and fresh apple and dill for a sweet and herbaceous touch.

We especially enjoyed the omelet with “Lighthouse” cheese, a type of sharp, mature cheese, which also came with a striking scatter of edible purple flowers.

The Verdict

Meyers Bageri has several locations in Copenhagen, so the Frederiksberg location is far from unique, but it makes an excellent stop for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. While it may be best known as a bakery, for its breads and pastries, my favorite items were the delicious omelet and smoked salmon smørrebrød.
