7/30/21 Update: The Quintana Roo Tourism Board states that there was a suggestion on how hotels and restaurants could operate at higher capacity by creating a safe health space, vaccinating or regularly testing all their staff and guests, but this was a recommendation and not a mandate. To date, no hotel, restaurant or bar is required to implement these measures.
Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and other Quintana Roo, Mexico Hotels Will Require Guests to Show Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or negative test results from a test within the past 72 hours to enter. The new requirement, which went into effect July 26, 2021, also applies to restaurants, bars, shopping centers, and other public places.
The mandate also applies to employees, so hotel and restaurant staff will either have to be fully vaccinated or have to test negative for COVID-19 every 3 days.
The new rule is in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Quintana Roo, as in other parts of Mexico, as the Delta variant takes hold; it's estimated to account for ~80% of new cases, which are primarily among younger unvaccinated people. Quintana Roo is a high risk orange region, according to Mexico's epidemiological map, along with other popular visitor destinations such as Cabo in Baja California Sur and Punta Mita in Nayarit. Mexican states with orange status require businesses to cap visitor capacity at 50%, and restaurants and bars must close by 12 midnight.
Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquín tweeted that 100% of those who have required intubation are unvaccinated, and 90% of those hospitalized due to COVID-19 are unvaccinated.
Although the U.S.-Mexico land border remains closed, Mexico remains open to flights, and does not require any COVID-19 test to visit. But visitors bound for the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, and other Quintana Roo destinations should ensure they're fully vaccinated and bring their vaccination card as proof, or be prepared to regularly test negative for COVID-19 in order to check into their hotel and dine at restaurants. They'll also want to make dining reservations well in advance, given the 50% capacity limitation.
