AMEX Has a 40% Transfer Bonus to British Airways Avios, similar to a deal that ran about 1 year ago. This is better than the more recent Chase 30% transfer bonus to British Airways Avios, although Chase Ultimate Rewards points are also much easier to earn for most people, due to the greater availability of 3X and 5X category bonuses. Here are the details of the AMEX offer:
- You must be enrolled in British Airways Executive Club
- Transfer at least 1000 AMEX Membership Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club, with a 40% transfer bonus
- Deadline to transfer is October 1, 2019, by 11:59pm MT
Best Uses of British Airways Avios
You can view the British Airways Avios Partner Award Chart Post Devaluation to see how many Avios you need. As before, the best uses of Avios tend to be short to medium haul intra-regional flights, such as those in Japan on JAL, on Cathay Pacific within Asia, and in Australia on Qantas, and in the U.S. on AA, as these don't have fuel surcharges and can be quite reasonable, even in business class.
Fifth freedom flights on British Airways, such as Singapore to Sydney, also have much lower fees than anything involving London, due to not only high fuel surcharges on flights departing London, but also the UK's onerous APD (air passenger duty) tax.
I especially like Cathay Pacific First Class Vancouver YVR to NYC JFK, which is 51,500 Avios + $58 if you can find award space. With the 40% transfer bonus, that's just 37,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points, a very good deal. Unfortunately, Cathay is making very little award space available in advance these days compared to previously.
