Hawaii Car Rental Deals and Discount Codes

What are the best Hawaii car rental deals and discount codes? Several of my luxury hotel clients are planning Hawaii honeymoons and anniversary trips, and while they're looking forward to staying at the best Hawaii luxury hotels, such as the Four Seasons Hualalai and Four Seasons Wailea, with Four Seasons Preferred Partner perks, they'd prefer to economize on their Hawaii car rental.

Here are the best Hawaii car rental deals and discount codes I've found currently, using as an example a 1 week rental on Maui at Kahului Airport (OGG). Of course, depending on where you're renting, your dates, and any corporate or other discount codes you have access to, you may find a better deal for your trip–if so, please let me know in the comments!

For all the examples below, I searched for a Maui car rental for June 21-28, pick up and return at Kahului Airport.

1. Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal: $200.23, Thrifty

Pros:

Best price I found for Maui for these dates
Intermediate car
Unlimited miles
May cancel without penalty at least 2 days in advance

Cons:

Must pay upfront
Must use the Chase credit card you're logged in with in Ultimate Rewards (already pre-populated)
1 day penalty if cancelled within 2 days of rental
No refund for no show

2. Discount Hawaii Car Rental: $225, Alamo

Pros:

No payment in advance
Includes 1 free driver
Unlimited miles
Can use any credit you prefer when picking up the car

Cons:

$25 more expensive than the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal rate

3. Island Air Affiliate Code for Budget: $245, Budget

Pros:

No payment in advance
Unlimited miles
Can use any credit you prefer when picking up the car

Cons:

$45 more expensive than the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal rate

Insurance

Note that the above rates do not include insurance. If you plan to use your credit card to cover Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance, be sure to use a credit card with primary car rental insurance coverage (unless you don't have a car or auto insurance, since then any good credit card's CDW insurance becomes primary). If you don't have your own auto insurance, you'll need to make sure you purchase liability insurance from the car rental company that covers damage to any other car and other property, and most importantly, to people (other drivers, pedestrians and you).

The Bottom Line

While I've listed the discounts I've found in order of cheapest price for the dates I searched, your dates, Hawaii destination, other discounts you're eligible for, and rental preferences can mean a different result for your particular search. Also take into account the convenience of not paying in advance, since other discounted rates such as Hotwire and Priceline typically require advance payment, and even the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal does require payment at the time of booking, even though it's refundable if cancelled prior to 2 days before your rental date.

At least on Maui, there are also local operations such as Maui Cruisers, which can be an even better deal than all of the above for long term rentals, if you don't mind a decidedly used car (which does after all, blend in better with locals' cars and makes it less likely you're car will be broken into!)
