The AMEX Centurion Lounge at San Francisco Airport SFO has eliminated its 3 day beds, unfortunately for exhausted travelers trying to nap. I'm a big fan of getting enough sleep while traveling, even though I don't always manage to follow my own advice.
Here's the “before” photo, when the AMEX Centurion Lounge SFO had 3 day beds, which were located on the other side of the lounge area near reception:
And in the first photo and below you can see the new layout, with only armchair seating and some tables and chairs. Note that I took this shortly before the lounge closed out for the night; earlier during my visit this area (and the other areas of the lounge) were packed.
Why the change? While I don't have any official explanation from AMEX, I suspect that the change is due to lounge overcrowding and the need to provide more seating. Earlier this year AMEX changed its Centurion Lounge access policy for families to a maximum of two immediate family members per AMEX Platinum member. See AMEX Centurion Lounge New Platinum Guest Policy: Only 2 Free Family Members. But judging by how crowded the AMEX Centurion Lounge has been on my two visits this year, at different times of day, it's not large families that are the problem, but the sheer number of eligible cardholders.
The new layout does provide more seating, but means that there is now no place to lie down, which was a distinctive feature of some AMEX Centurion lounges (the AMEX Centurion Lounge in Houston also had day beds when we visited it last year). I'm disappointed with the change, and would love to see lounge overcrowding alleviated, for example with a set number of complimentary entries per year per cardholder.
Are you disappointed with the AMEX Centurion Lounge SFO's removal of the day beds, or are you happy that there are more seats in this area?
