Andaz Maui at Wailea Location and Check-In

The Andaz Maui at Wailea is located at 3550 Wailea Alanui Drive, about a 30 minute drive from Kahului Airport (OGG), which has nonstop service to DEN, DFW, EWR, LAS, LAX, ORD, PHX, SAN, SEA, SFO, SJC, SLC, and YVR, among others. The Andaz Maui is a little over a mile north of the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea and the Fairmont Kea Lani.

On arrival, our Hawaii Safe Travels status was checked. We'd taken a taxi, but if you're renting a car, expect to pay for valet parking, which was $40 per night at the time of our visit. This is separate from the Andaz Maui resort fee, which at time of writing is $48 + tax per night and includes the kind of things that Four Seasons Maui includes without any resort fee, such as an Outrigger Canoe excursion, use of the fitness center, hula lessons, snorkeling equipment, etc.

Fortunately there wasn't a wait at check-in, so before too long we were on our way to our suite in the Makai Tower.

On arrival I was greeted with a white orchid lei, and on check-in we were offered lemonade, as well as a bag with packaged snacks (cookies, potato chips), plastic bottles (which we didn't bother keeping, as we were traveling with our own), and a zipped bag with face masks and hand sanitizer.

Andaz Deluxe Ocean View Suite

We reserved an Ocean View Suite, and confirmed a Hyatt Prive upgrade to an Andaz Deluxe Ocean View Suite. These suites, as well as the lower category Partial View Suite, Pool Side Suite and Andaz Suite, are all 850 square feet, but differ in terms of the view.

The living area of the suite has a large table, convenient for in-room dining, and also useful as a second desk to supplement the smaller desk by the flat screen TV.

The sofa is a sofa bed, which we used for our teenage son. Don't expect too much comfort with it, however; the mattress was rather thin.

We were able to pick our Hyatt Prive welcome amenity from the Mokapu Market, so we chose a bottle of red wine, pictured here on the counter of the bar area.

The enclosed bar area held a Nespresso maker, although when we tried to use it, we discovered it was broken. We'd have expected this to have been caught during final room inspection, but it apparently wasn't. We called Housekeeping, and were eventually brought a working Nespresso machine.

The bedroom is separated from the living room with a sliding wooden door.

The bedroom has its own balcony with one lounge chair; much more comfortable than the two chairs on the living room balcony, although the view wasn't as nice as it's further away from the ocean and overlooks some green roofs.

The suite's bathroom has double sinks, although they're very close together and I didn't care for the design, which is very flat and doesn't drain well. There's also a large soaking tub, and behind it, a rain shower, although with shower curtains rather than glass enclosed, which I would have preferred.

Andaz Maui Swimming Pools

Perhaps the best part of the resort is the lovely view of the tiered pools and ocean. The pools on the upper levels tend to be less crowded and hence a better bet for swimming laps.

.

While there are no age restrictions for any of the tiered pools, kids and families naturally tend to use the free form shallow pool closest to the ocean.

Adults who prefer a completely quiet pool experience, sans kids and without louder adults or music, should head to the Tranquil Pool, which is near the Fitness Center and Spa.

Breakfast Buffet at Ka'ana Kitchen, Andaz Maui

TravelSort Clients reserving with Hyatt Prive benefits enjoy complimentary breakfast for two daily at Ka'ana Kitchen, which serves a breakfast buffet. Our first morning it was hard to locate our server for our outdoor table and service was very slow, even to get juice, let alone cooked to order items such as omelets. The following morning was much better.

Highlights from the breakfast buffet were the breakfast bao buns with scrambled eggs and Portuguese sausage, fresh strawberries, and greek yogurt with fresh blueberries and granola. Cooked to order omelets were good, and I liked that we were able to get avocado on the side.

The Verdict

Andaz Maui at Wailea is a great choice for young couples who crave time by the pool and great views, given the several tiered swimming pools to choose from. The rooms and suites are contemporary, although in our view, due for a refresh since it's been 8 years since the renovation prior to the resort's opening in 2013.

We certainly appreciated the additional space of the Andaz Deluxe Ocean View Suite compared to a regular room, although there were some form over function issues, from the rectangular rather flat sinks, flimsy shower curtains rather than glass enclosed shower and closet in the bathroom (not a fan) to the lack of power outlets and the thin mattress on the sofa bed.

Breakfast our first morning at Ka'ana Kitchen was chaotic, with very slow service, although that improved on our second morning. Dinner at Morimoto (a third party, not run by Hyatt) was very good. Overall, however, our favorite luxury resort in Maui remains the Four Seasons Maui.
