This Luxury Resort Reopened in 2020 after a multi-million dollar renovation, and offers rooms, suites, and private bungalows on prime oceanfront property that spans over 30 acres.
After a long day of traveling, we were thrilled to have been upgraded to a spacious suite, with a comfortable king size bed in the bedroom, sitting area, and a sofa bed for our son in the living room.
.
Dinner included a fantastic smoked pork dish that was dramatically uncovered tableside.
.
In the morning, we could finally appreciate the gorgeous ocean view from the balconies; the suite has a balcony off the living room, and another balcony off of the bedroom.
.
On our way to breakfast we passed the large main swimming pool, which later on in the day was very popular with the many families at the resort:
.
Fortunately for couples seeking kid-free relaxation, there's also a very tranquil adults only pool (must be 21 or older to access).
.
The restaurant is open air, with a modern tropical motif:
.
I enjoyed one of the more unique pancake dishes I've ever tasted: Japanese purple sweet potato pancakes with coconut, beautifully adorned with edible flowers, strawberries and pineapple:
.
There's a full array of paddle sports, including kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Just offshore, I snorkeled along the reef and saw parrotfish, butterflyfish, bluestripe snapper, yellow tang, and a pufferfish.
.
My son enjoyed a tennis clinic with only two other players plus the coach, which meant plenty of good, sweaty exercise. There's also 45 holes of golf, for avid golfers.
After our water sports and tennis, everyone was ready for a treat of homemade mango passionfruit sorbet–simply heavenly.
Can you guess the name and location of this newly renovated tropical resort?

Hilary, I’m very curious to see how you rate the Mauna Lani with other hotels in Hawaii. We booked a week long stay this coming June. FS Hualalai was out of our budget. The Mauna Lani seems like a more affordable luxury option worthy of consideration. We took advantage of the double Virtuoso offer: fourth night free and guaranteed upgrade at time of booking (the latter is no longer publicly offered). I’ve never had Ube, but those pancakes look amazing.
Looking forward to reading your full review.
Hope you enjoy your upcoming June stay! We will have a full review forthcoming. Also feel free to become a client at https://travelsort.com/travelsort-client-request-form/ for future reservations, as we’re able to share our immediate insights with existing clients.
Mauna-Lani: Big Island, HA?
Yes! It’s the Mauna Lani, now an Auberge Resort. Have you stayed since the renovation?
We stayed at the Maina Lani three times before the renovation. Twice we were upgraded to an upper floor ocean front room. Staff was amazing. Unfortunately, after the renovation we feel as though we have been priced-out. I believe they are now going after a market share of Hualalai patrons. We’ve stayed there too, but only once due to the higher cost.
Glad that you enjoyed your past stays at the Mauna Lani, including ocean front rooms and the staff! Yes, several of my Four Seasons contacts now work at the Mauna Lani, and I agree they’re trying to attract a segment of that market. That said, I just checked a few upcoming dates, and Mauna Lani’s rate for an Ocean View room is about $600 less ($1069 + tax vs. $1685 + tax per night). For shoulder season dates later this year, it’s a $550 difference, so still a pretty significant difference. These multi-million dollar renovations ultimately have to get priced… Read more »
