Andaz Tokyo Location and Check-In

The Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills is located at Toranomon 1 Chome-23-4 in the Mori Tower, the tallest tower in Tokyo. It's about a 25 minute drive from Tokyo Haneda Airport or about a 1 hour drive from Tokyo Narita Airport without traffic, and a 7-20 min. drive from Tokyo Station, depending on traffic.

After entering on the ground floor, you take an elevator to the 51st floor, where the main lobby and reception are. As is typical at Andaz hotels, there's not a front desk per se, but rather a station where staff are on iPads. We were welcomed and led to a communal table to sit down to proceed with our check-in, and offered a welcome drink. Given our long flight, we opted for water.

Andaz Tokyo Deluxe Room

Andaz Tokyo's rooms and suites are on floors 47-50, so from the lobby on the 51st floor, guests take a different elevator to go down to the guest room floors. Entry level rooms are spacious for Tokyo, at 538 sq. ft. (50 sq. m.) and the different categories are based on the view: city, Imperial Palace and park, Tokyo Tower, or Tokyo Bay. We were able to confirm a Hyatt Prive upgrade at time of booking to a Deluxe Room, which is 700 sq. ft. (65 sq. m.) and was the perfect amount of space for the three of us.

We especially loved the curved wall of windows and panoramic views from the room.

The King Bed was, as expected, too firm for us, so we asked Housekeeping to add additional mattress pads while we were at dinner, to make the bed softer, which helped.

Our Hyatt Prive welcome amenity was a beautifully presented fruit plate, bottle of red wine, and fruit juices for our son.

There was a Nespresso machine as well as a tea pot by the mini bar.

The bathroom has a lovely wooden ceiling and counter, although there's just one sink. There's a Toto toilet in a separate chamber, and a glass enclosed wet area with a rain shower and large round soaking tub.

Andaz Tokyo Breakfast at The Tavern – Grill & Lounge

Hyatt Prive guests enjoy complimentary daily breakfast for two at The Tavern, which is just off the lobby on the 51st floor. The breakfast is from 6:30-11am.

While normally there's a buffet, the hotel had already taken precautions due to the coronavirus, such that there was an a la carte menu instead.

We started with mango juice and delicious yogurt with persimmon compote.

I opted for the Japanese breakfast, which consisted of a big bowl of rice, grilled fish, tamago (Japanese omelet), vegetables, Japanese pickles, and miso soup. It was good, although not my favorite Japanese breakfast of the trip.

My husband and son each tried an egg dish. My husband liked but didn't love his house smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. Mainly, he was disappointed with how small the serving was.

Our son's Eggs Benedict was the best entree; it was served on a crispy croissant and was gone before I managed to try a bite.

Instead, I enjoyed a plain croissant with some of the Australian Beerenberg jam, as a sweet finish, with a cappuccino.

Fitness Center and Swimming Pool

The Spa, with its fitness center and swimming pool, are on the 37th floor. There's a small lounge to wait in.

The swimming pool, jacuzzis and wet areas were closed during our stay, but when open, the pool area is open 5am-10pm. The lap pool is 65 feet long (20 meters) and there are also two jacuzzi whirlpools.

The Verdict

We'd heard that some more recent stays at the Andaz Tokyo weren't as good as ones in prior years, but we were pleasantly impressed with our stay, particularly the well-appointed Deluxe Room, with its handsome wood finishes, wall of windows and panoramic view, thoughtful welcome amenities of wine and fresh fruit, and great rain shower and round soaking tub.

What we didn't care for was the ugly carpet or the firm mattress, although this is always the case for Hyatt. Fortunately extra mattress pads helped somewhat, though Four Seasons mattresses are far more comfortable for us.

Service was also very good, from check-in to the Sushi Bar to the breakfast at the Tavern Restaurant, where our server was very careful about one of our allergies. The complimentary wine hour is a nice benefit, although it was a bit disappointing that, by 7:10pm (nearly 1 hour before it ends at 8pm), the hotel had already run out of the dessert option.

While Toranomon Hills isn't as convenient to Tokyo Station as Aman Tokyo, the new Four Seasons Tokyo at Otemachi, the Shangri-La Tokyo or the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, it's still walking distance from Ginza and the Imperial Palace, so the Andaz Tokyo is a good choice for Hyatt loyalists looking for modern Japanese flair, especially with the opportunity for a Hyatt Prive confirmed upgrade at time of booking.
