40K JetBlue Plus Card Bonus Offer

40K JetBlue Plus Card Bonus Offer

A 40K JetBlue Plus card bonus offer is available per Reddit, the highest public bonus we've seen on this card since its launch last year (see New JetBlue Credit Cards Worth It?) The general offer for this card has always been 30,000 JetBlue TrueBlue points, which is too low to be interesting, in my view, as it's worth ~$390. This 40K offer will still be too low for most folks who don't already fly JetBlue, but for those who do, and need to top up their account for a JetBlue Mint redemption, it could be interesting.

  • Bonus: 40,000 TrueBlue points after $1000 spend in the first 90 days
  • 5000 points as anniversary bonus each year on your account anniversary
  • 6X points per dollar on JetBlue spend
  • 2X points per dollar on restaurant and grocery store spend
  • 1 point per dollar for all other spend
  • Free first checked bag for the primary cardmember and up to 3 companions on the same reservation when using the card to purchase tickets on JetBlue flights
  • 10% redemption bonus for redeemed TrueBlue points
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 fee is NOT waived the first year

FAQ

What is a JetBlue TrueBlue Point Worth?

TrueBlue redemption amounts are tied to the cash value of tickets, so more expensive fares also cost more in terms of TrueBlue points. For example, when a JetBlue Mint ticket costs $659, it will cost 50,000 TrueBlue points + ~$5. This yields a value of 1.3 cents per TrueBlue point.

Which Points Transfer to JetBlue TrueBlue?

AMEX Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points transfer to JetBlue TrueBlue. If you have Citi ThankYou points, there's currently a 25% transfer bonus, valid for ThankYou points transfers to TrueBlue that are completed by October 25, 2017, but unfortunately this is still not a good deal because ThankYou points only transfer to TrueBlue points 2:1 (1000 ThankYou points = 500 TrueBlue points) so even with the 25% transfer bonus, 1000 ThankYou points only transfe to 625 TrueBlue points, which is poor.

When Do the Signup Bonus and the 10% Redemption Bonuses Post?

Per JetBlue terms, the bonus points post 4-6 weeks after making qualifying spend (for the signup bonus points) and similarly, 4-6 weeks after making the redemption (for the 10% redemption bonus points).

Is There a Maximum Number of Bonus Points That Can Be Earned for the 10% Redemption Bonus?

No, there is no maximum (unlike for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card redemption bonus, which has a maximum of 10,000 AA miles per calendar year).

Best Use of the JetBlue Plus Card?

While in the past I've recommended the no annual fee card, the 40K bonus is just enough to make the JetBlue Plus card more interesting, even with the $99 fee, at least for the first year. If you already have some TrueBlue points, the best use of the card would be earning the bonus and redeeming for a JetBlue Mint award, as you'll also earn back 10% of your redeemed TrueBlue points with the redemption bonus.

Then, when your card comes up for renewal in a year, I'd evaluate whether you plan to fly enough on JetBlue or redeem points so as to make paying the $99 fee worth it, or if it makes more sense to downgrade to the no annual fee JetBlue card. Keep in mind that the 5000 JetBlue TrueBlue points anniversary bonus is worth about $65, so it doesn't fully cover the annual fee. The no annual fee card earns 3X per dollar on JetBlue spend vs. the 6X per dollar of the JetBlue Plus card, so you'd have to spend ~$870 on JetBlue to break even, assuming each TrueBlue point is worth 1.3 cents per point.
