About a month ago, we wrote about Singapore Airlines' New Saver Awards: First and Business Class for Star Alliance Partners, which at the time was still uncertain because Singapore Airlines' announcement was for its own KrisFlyer members. The new KrisFlyer award chart now has “saver” awards for business and first class (although not Suites Class).
Good news: now Singapore Airlines Business Class awards are bookable by United (and presumably other Star Alliance partners)!
For example, the world's longest flight in the world, Newark (EWR) to Singapore (SIN) can be booked on United.com.
Just login to your United MileagePlus account (at least for now you can still use your United MileagePlus number, although going forward, your MileagePlus number will be the same as your Continental OnePass number) and go to Award Flight Search.
I typed in EWR and SIN and was able to find space on an outbound and return flight EWR-SIN (though no guarantee it will be available by the time you read this) later this month.
Note that right now only last minute award space is being released, so you won't be able to plan award travel for April and further out, but hopefully in the future there will be some advance award space released. Also see our post How to Find Star Alliance Award Space
So what is the cost? The outbound Singapore Airlines EWR-SIN in Business Class priced at 60K miles + $77.50, and the return at 60K miles + $39.90, so 120K MileagePlus miles + $117.40 total. Not bad, given the length of those flights, quality of Singapore Airlines business class, and the fact that you can pretty easily get 100K miles via a couple of credit card signups after minimum spend,
