If you cancelled a United award booked under the old pre-devaluation award chart, but didn't redeposit the miles, you can apparently get access to the old United award chart and make changes not only to dates, but also to carriers, class of service, and even origin and departure, per Dan.
Previously, in How to Fly Lufthansa First Class Later in 2014 with Pre-Devaluation United Miles, I wrote that after the United Award Chart Devaluation, you would be able to change dates, paying the close-in ticketing fee if you're not a United elite, but that you wouldn't be able to change anything else. I was wrong.
If you have correctly canceled your original United ticket without redepositing the miles, you will have a screen that looks like this:
Dan originally had a FRA to EWR one way in Lufthansa First Class when he cancelled without redepositing. He was able to:
- Change the date
- Change the origin and destination (e.g. EWR to FRA)
- Change it to a roundtrip at old United award chart prices (e.g. 135,000 United miles for the roundtrip, instead of 220,000 United miles)
- Change the carrier
- Change the class of service
One of the best aspects is that it's possible to add another passenger, at the same old United award chart rates! If you cancelled without redepositing a one way award booked under the old United award chart, you could turn that into a couple of first class roundtrip Asiana Suites awards, for 140,000 United miles per person instead of the 240,000 miles per person charged by the new award chart–how great is that?
So if you cancelled a United award booked under the old United award chart, without redepositing, you have a golden ticket on your hands, assuming United doesn't “enhance” the current rebooking process.
Did you book any pre-devaluation United awards and cancel without redepositing miles so that you can now access the old United award chart?
