Hotel Sacher Wien is quite intimate at just 149 rooms and suites, and perfectly located, just across from the State Opera House and a short walk from the Opernring, Kaerntner Strasse, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Imperial Palace. Superior and Deluxe Rooms are good sized, at 322-430 square feet, and beautifully appointed with antique mirrors and original oil paintings, yet fresh from a 2011 renovation by French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. We recommend springing for a Deluxe Room, Top Deluxe Room or Suite and asking us at TravelSort to arrange it to be on one of the top floors, with a view of the Opera House. As a boutique hotel, Hotel Sacher provides complimentary WiFi, a nice change from the WiFi fees at other luxury hotels in Vienna. A slice of traditional Sacher Torte with cream in Cafe Sacher Wien is a must, even if you have to pay for it with a visit to the fitness center and the superb Sacher Spa. If we had to find fault, we'd say that chocolate shampoo might be overdoing it, even for chocoholics, but otherwise this is a gorgeous Vienna luxury hotel at the top of its game.

If you want to stay in a true Palace, the Hotel Imperial Vienna is for you: it was built by the Prince of Wurttemberg as his own private residence in 1865. If you're really looking to stay as a royal, the Belle Etage is where the Prince had its own private apartments; today they comprise the Franz Joseph and Maria Theresa Imperial Suites, with a few smaller rooms between them for your bodyguards. With past guests including the Queen of England, King of Sweden and Arnold Schwarzenegger you'll be in good company, and with private butler service for all suites, in good hands. Classic Rooms are on the small side, at 269-322 square feet, but bathrooms do have a separate shower and bathtub and dual vanities, convenient for couples. Getting to Vienna with Miles and Points

The only nonstop flights to Vienna from the U.S. are from NYC (JFK) and DC (IAD) on Austrian Airlines/Tyrolean Air. Austrian is a Star Alliance partner, so you could use 50,000 United miles for business class one way/100,000 miles roundtrip. There is only coach and business class on this flight, and the business class seats are angled lie-flat.

If you don't need the nonstop, I'd recommend Lufthansa first class, although you can't book this in advance. It's 67,500 United miles one way, or 135,000 miles roundtrip, and well worth the slight premium in miles. Aim to go through Frankfurt if possible, so you can use the Lufthansa First Class Terminal.

You can earn the miles from either 2 credit card applications plus credit card spend, or from 3 credit card applications. Apply for the Ink Bold or Ink Plus business card, together with either the United MileagePlus Explorer or the Sapphire Preferred, then either earn the additional United miles through spend or by, in about 3 months, applying for the third card (the United MileagePlus Explorer if you already applied for the Sapphire Preferred, or the Sapphire Preferred if you already applied for the MileagePlus Explorer).

Alternatively, you could use 50,000 British Airways Avios to fly business class roundtrip from Boston to Dublin or Shannon, then buy a cheap flight to Vienna.
