Update: My AMEX Business Platinum referral now works.
AMEX Refer a Friend could earn you up to 55K Membership Rewards points for AMEX Business Platinum referrals, and up to 55K SPG Starpoints for SPG Business AMEX referrals. Before you email all your friends, however, consider that even AMEX Business Card signup bonuses are now once in a lifetime, and for your true friends, you should really let them know they can only earn the signup bonus once (with the possible exception of a targeted offer). Otherwise you could be in for an irate friend if they sign up under your emailed 40K offer, and soon after are targeted for a 100K or 150K AMEX Business Platinum bonus offer that they then lose out on, or even the recent 75K AMEX Business Platinum via LinkedIn.
Here are the offer details:
AMEX Refer a Friend for the AMEX Business Platinum: 15K Points/Referral, Up to 55K Points per Calendar Year
- Go to AMEX Refer a Friend and log in to see if you're eligible to refer friends. You can only refer friends to an AMEX card you currently hold.
- If you're eligible to refer friends to the 40K AMEX Business Platinum, you'll see a screen similar to the one below.
- Enter your friends' names and email addresses
- Earn 15,000 Membership Rewards points for each friend you refer who applies through your link, up to a maximum of 55K Membership Rewards points per calendar year.
- Friends must apply by 7/26/17, at least for the referral offer I see. Check the terms of your own referral offer.
- Unfortunately, you may want to wait on doing this since in my own test in sending a referral link to an extra email address, the link led to this error page on AMEX's Web site, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Perhaps it's truly a technical glitch, or maybe it's on purpose so that AMEX can try to drum up more cardholders without actually paying any referral points….
AMEX Refer a Friend for the SPG Business AMEX: 5K Points/Referral, Up to 55K Points per Calendar Year
The SPG Business AMEX referral to the 25K SPG Business AMEX did work, however. This card has no fee the first year and a $95 annual fee after that, so friends may be more likely to sign up for it, especially as to my knowledge there aren't any higher targeted offers at the moment for the SPG Business AMEX (although if you've received one, please share in the comments).
It's also unclear how long this card will continue to be offered in light of the Marriott acquisition of Starwood. It's especially handy for earning miles that are otherwise tough to earn, such as Lufthansa Miles & More miles to fly Lufthansa First Class, since no other transferable points transfer to them and it's not possible to buy them either.
- Earn 5000 SPG Starpoints for each friend you refer who applies through your link, up to a maximum of 55K Starpoints per calendar year
- Friends must apply by 1/20/17, at least for the referral offer I see. Check the terms of your own referral offer.
FAQ
Will All Friends I Refer via AMEX Refer a Friend Receive Emails?
No; if your friend has opted out of AMEX marketing communications s/he will not receive an email.
Are Emails Sent Right Away?
Yes, at least in the two tests I made, the emails were received within a couple minutes, unlike the Chase Refer a Friend, where emails can be quite delayed.
Does the Friend Have to Apply via My Referral Link to Receive the Referral Bonus?
Yes; if your friend doesn't use your referral link to apply, you won't receive the referral bonus.
When Will I Receive a Referral Bonus for Friends' Successful Applications?
AMEX says to allow 6-8 weeks for the referral bonus to post to your account. Additionally, your card must be active and in good standing in order to receive the referral bonus.
Can Friends Who Have Had the AMEX Card in the Past Get the Bonus Again?
No; AMEX signup bonuses for all charge cards and credit cards have become once in a lifetime.
What Are the Best Uses of AMEX Membership Rewards Points?
While AMEX Membership Rewards points can be used for many things, you'll get the most value if you transfer them to airline partners and redeem for first class or business class.
