20 Percent Off United Awards to Hawaii

20% Off United Awards to Hawaii

United Awards to Hawaii are 20% Off for Economy Class roundtrip tickets on Mondays through Thursdays, from August 8 to December 15, per Dan. United awards are usually 45,000 MileagePlus miles for economy roundtrip, so with the 20% discount they are 36,000 miles. Here are the details:

  • Valid dates: August 8-December 15, 2015
  • Valid days: Mondays-Thursdays
  • Roundtrip economy travel only; no discount on one way or business class awards
  • Open jaw also eligible
Here are a couple of examples:

1. San Francisco SFO to Kona KOA for 36,000 Miles Roundtrip

20% Off United Awards to Hawaii: SFO to Kona, Big Island

2. NYC EWR to Honolulu HNL, then Kona KOA to SFO for 36,000 Miles

Out of curiousity, I also looked at the retail price of this open jaw, which was $2500. Now, I don't know about you, but I would never pay that much for economy travel to/from Hawaii, even an open jaw, but that price does yield a nominal value of 6.9 cents per MileagePlus mile, given the currently discounted United economy award.

Of course, United miles aren't the cheapest way to fly United to Hawaii; with Singapore KrisFlyer miles roundtrip economy on United is 35,000 KrisFlyer miles, and business class is 60,000 miles. As long as you see United MileagePlus Saver award availability, you should be able to book the flight with KrisFlyer miles, and I highly recommend this if you find business class award availability, since you would save 20,000 miles on a roundtrip award.

For example, this business class award on the coveted Honolulu HNL to Newark EWR nonstop in flat bed business class would be 30,000 KrisFlyer miles, instead of 40,000 United MileagePlus miles:

Where to Stay in Hawaii

My favorite luxury resort in Hawaii is Four Seasons Hualalai, on the Big Island–and since only United offers a non-stop between Kona and SFO, this United award discount is especially good for those in the Bay Area. Also see my prior posts, Honeymoon in Hawaii: Which Island and Which Hotels? and my review of Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, which is also very popular among my clients.

Bottom Line: This United award discount is best used if you have a lot of United miles and don't mind flying economy to Hawaii. Otherwise, I recommend trying to book United Business Class more cheaply by finding saver award availability and transferring points to Singapore KrisFlyer, although keep in mind there is a risk of the award disappearing during the time it takes to transfer points to KrisFlyer.
