Ritz-Carlton STARS is Ritz-Carlton's own preferred partner program, and there are several offers that are unique to STARS such as certain complimentary Club Lounge access or guaranteed upgrade offers. These offers are not available with AMEX FHR or Virtuoso.
On the other hand, where there are free night offers that are also available via AMEX FHR or Virtuoso, your best bet is to book with Virtuoso, to enjoy Virtuoso benefits of an upgrade if available, a $100 dining or spa credit, and use your Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3X points, or for that matter, any other credit card you prefer. With AMEX FHR, you always must pay with an AMEX card, and unfortunately no AMEX earns 3X points on hotel stays.
